The Pentagon revealed that US forces successfully destroyed more than 80 drones and at least six ballistic missiles launched by Iran in an unprecedented attack targeting Israel. This action follows an earlier Iranian strike against an Israeli consulate in Syria.
In a statement, US Central Command (CENTCOM) detailed the interception operation that prevented a significant portion of over 300 Iranian drones and missiles from reaching their targets. US forces, assisted by European Command destroyers, destroyed the weapons both in the air and on the ground in Yemen.
Iran claims the attack was retaliation for an April 1st Israeli strike on its Syrian consulate. However, Israel and its allies, including the US, have strongly condemned the assault. CENTCOM underscored Iran's "malign and reckless behavior" as a threat to regional stability and the safety of US and allied forces.
The G-7 nations also denounced Iran's actions, warning of the risk of further escalation in the region. Israel has labeled the attack a violation of international law and urged the UN Security Council to designate Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) a terrorist organization. Iran asserts its actions were justified as self-defense under the UN Charter.
The recent exchange of strikes between Israel and Iran marks a dangerous escalation of tensions in the Middle East. The US interception of the drone and missile attack demonstrates ongoing US commitment to Israeli defense, but the potential for further conflict remains high.
