WASHINGTON – In a developing situation, U.S. forces have actively intercepted a series of Iranian-launched drones targeting Israel, a senior defense official confirmed Sunday. The interceptions highlight the escalating tensions between Iran and Israel.
"U.S. forces in the region continue to shoot down Iranian-launched drones targeting Israel, demonstrating our ironclad commitment to Israel's security," the official stated. "Our forces remain postured to provide additional defensive support and protect U.S. forces operating in the region."
President Joe Biden and his national security team have been closely monitoring the situation, reconvening in the Situation Room multiple times following Iran's initial attack on Israel. According to a U.S. official cited by CNN, the previous meeting lasted approximately two hours.
The White House has confirmed the Iranian drone attack and underscored unwavering U.S. support for Israel's security. National Security Council spokesperson Adrienne Watson stated that the attack would likely continue "over a number of hours," emphasizing the ongoing nature of the situation.
Iran's actions come just days after its Supreme Leader vowed retaliation for an airstrike targeting an Iranian consulate in Syria. The airstrike, suspected to be carried out by Israel, resulted in the deaths of several senior Iranian commanders.
President Biden returned to Washington from his Delaware beach house to convene with his national security team and manage the unfolding crisis in West Asia.
