Why Indian Army Rejected the JVPC Despite Successfully Passing Rigorous Trials

The Joint Venture Protective Carbine (JVPC), hailed for its innovative design as a compact and lightweight weapon, encountered a significant roadblock in its journey to widespread adoption within the Indian Army. The primary culprit behind this setback was the unpopularity of its 5.56 x 30mm ammunition.

This unique caliber, developed specifically for the JVPC, deviated from the standard 5.56 x 45mm NATO round utilized by the Indian Army and its allies. This divergence created logistical challenges, as supplying and maintaining separate ammunition stocks for the JVPC would have added complexities to military operations.

The 5.56 x 30mm round's limited use globally also raised concerns about its availability during wartime scenarios. This reliance on a non-standard caliber could potentially hinder operational flexibility in situations requiring resupply from external sources.

Despite its innovative features and promising performance, the JVPC's fate was ultimately sealed by the ammunition incompatibility issue. While it found some acceptance among paramilitary forces, the Indian Army's preference for standardized ammunition proved to be an insurmountable hurdle.

The JVPC's story serves as a stark reminder of the importance of ammunition compatibility and logistical considerations in the development and adoption of new weapon systems. While the carbine itself showcased potential, its reliance on an unpopular and non-standard caliber ultimately hindered its widespread acceptance within the Indian Army.

It can still be adopted by all SWAT like units across India. I am suprised that it wasn't adopted by CORAS commandos from the RPF. This would be an ideal weapon in the confined spaces of railway carraiges but I see them using AK series or Trichy Assualt Rifles.

It is assault rifle caliber of 5.56x30mm designed to go thru' bullet proof vests! Jat Sikh soldiers can easily hold one JVPC in each hand and fire at indoor holed up terrorists.. Army is just trying to import CQB UAE Arab designed and made rifles now...

Yes NSG and personnel security specialists can use these easily concealable weapons. COBRAS are naxal hunting commandos in the jungles and they will require TAR [Indian AK47 clones] and, Trica-Baby TAR CQB type of rifles ;plus perhaps IAR also!

Redesign the carbine as 5.56 x 45 mm Nato/Indian round commonly used by the army to meet the armies ammunition requirement in a short period of time . A well designed local carbine inducted into army , Parapolice , police organisation will auger well for Indian small arms and ammunition .

CORAS are for RPF and they are not COBRAS.

What can we expect from IA, they will find a way to import in the face of indegenious products. Really pity private sector for developing new products where IA is involved.

If apart from calibre every thing else is fine then Bharat Forge if they can ensures that same gun is upgraded to required calibre?. I hope they don't have imported substitute assembled in India in mind.

This is called designed to fail. Free to import again.
Just anything to kill the product other than merit. JPC quality verses others. Quality is more important or having idiosyncrasy about bullet size. If product is best for purpose, why no use? They can make as many bullet, but use the best product.

First quality is best for purpose, then why it is not being used? Bullets can be manufactured.

IA is right here.. management of a specific calibre ammunition for only one gun will be a logistic nightmare for them ....

The private companies can make 5.56×30 mm available as the government will release a tender of this ammunition. But first, the all the information of the cartridge should be transferred to the private sector ammunition manufacturing companies like KSSL, SSS Defence, Hughes Precision etc so they can manufacture the cartridge accurately.

I think you are watching too many Bollywood movies.

JVPC is a machine pistol, not an assault rifle. Assault rifles are big guns which shoot at extended ranges compared to machine pistols and sub machine guns. Machine pistols are pistols which work like a machine gun.

If it's good as advertised, I dont think recalibrating is such a big deal.but first why did we deviate
from the norms?

They could have simply gone for the regular 5.56mm instead, and this "desi Uzi" likely may have found a larger.Although this gun still rocked in CoD back in the day during early 2010s.

Who said it’s best for purpose?
