With ATGM Upgrade and CLAMS Integration, Indian Army's BMP-2 Sarath Gains More Firepower

The Infantry Combat Vehicle (ICV) BMP-2 Sarath of the Indian Army has been substantially upgraded, resulting in an improvement of its combat capabilities. An enhanced capability to transport two Forget Anti-Tank Guided Missiles (ATGMs) as opposed to the solitary missile that was previously integrated is the most significant development.

With this update, the Army is moving from outdated second-generation ATGM systems to more sophisticated third-generation fire-and-forget versions, modernising its ATGM arsenal. Improved lethality, accuracy, and range versus opponent defences are the main goals of this adaptation. Remarkably, the Army is also actively creating its own third-generation ATGMs domestically, enhancing its self-reliance in this crucial sector.

Beyond just integrating missiles, the BMP-2 Sarath upgrade goes farther. Additionally, the Army intends to equip the BMP-2/CMT chassis with the Canister Launched Loiter Munition System (CLAMS). With the powerful mix of precision attack and loitering capabilities provided by CLAMS, the BMP-2 can engage targets with deadly accuracy and operate beyond line of sight.

The CLAMS integration provides the BMP-2 with additional capabilities. Its primary function is still as an infantry combat vehicle, but it can also be used for close air support, reconnaissance operations, and intelligence gathering. The BMP-2's increased adaptability makes it a more useful tool in a variety of combat situations.

As part of the update, the BMP-2 will also have two Konkurs-M launchers added. These launchers are a low-cost alternative to the more modern Forget ATGMs for targeting armoured targets.

In order to make the BMP-2 even more effective during nighttime operations, Alpha Design Technologies has supplied the Thermal Imager Standalone Kit, or TISK. The gunner's situational awareness and ability to identify targets in low light levels are enhanced by this equipment.

These improvements greatly improve the BMP-2 Sarath's combat endurance, adaptability, and firepower. The incorporation of CLAMS offers a critical capability for precision strikes and reconnaissance, while the enhanced firepower enables the ICV to engage numerous targets simultaneously.
