After Failed Amphibious Trials, Indian Army Unlikely to Buy US Stryker Armoured Vehicle, Focus Now Shifts on Indigenous WhAP

A proposed plan for the Indian Army to acquire the American-made Stryker Armoured Vehicle is now in doubt after the vehicle failed to meet a critical operational requirement during recent trials.

India’s Defence Secretary, Rajesh Kumar Singh, has officially verified that the Stryker variant tested in India lacked the amphibious capabilities essential for the Army's needs.

This development shifts the focus towards the indigenously developed Wheeled Armoured Platform (WhAP), as the nation continues its major military modernisation drive.

The Stryker, a family of eight-wheeled armoured vehicles manufactured by General Dynamics Land Systems, was evaluated in India earlier this year. These trials were part of a potential co-production deal under the India-US Defence Technology and Trade Initiative (DTTI).

The vehicle, which has been extensively used by US forces in conflicts such as those in Iraq and Afghanistan, was tested across diverse Indian terrains, from deserts to high-altitude regions, to assess its performance.

However, the trials revealed a significant shortcoming. The Indian Army specifically requires a new armoured vehicle to be amphibious, meaning it must be capable of traversing rivers and water bodies on its own.

Amphibious feature is considered vital for operations in India’s riverine border regions and waterlogged territories, particularly along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) with China and in the northeast.

Defence Secretary Singh confirmed the tested Stryker did not have this capability, making it unsuitable for the Army’s current requirements.

"The Indian Army is looking for an amphibious version of the system," Singh stated, adding that the United States has offered to demonstrate a different, amphibious-capable variant during a future joint military exercise.

The Indian Army’s search for a new vehicle falls under its WhAP program, which aims to replace its ageing fleet of Soviet-era platforms like the BRDM-2 reconnaissance vehicle.

The Army needs a modern, modular 8x8 vehicle that can transport troops safely, be equipped with advanced weaponry like anti-tank missiles, and operate effectively across all terrains.

The ability to cross water is a non-negotiable feature, crucial for navigating challenges in areas like the Pangong Tso in Ladakh and the riverine terrain of the Brahmaputra basin.

While the tested Stryker is a combat-proven platform with advanced electronics and strong armour, its lack of a standard amphibious function was a critical failure point.

In contrast, India has been developing its own solution. The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), in partnership with Tata Advanced Systems, has produced an indigenous 8x8 amphibious armoured vehicle known as the WhAP, or Kestrel.

This domestic platform is specifically designed to meet the Army's requirement for water mobility and is currently undergoing its own series of advanced trials.

The potential Stryker deal, valued at over $1 billion, included provisions for technology transfer and manufacturing within India, aligning with the government's 'Make in India' policies. Major Indian defence firms like Larsen & Toubro (L&T) and Mahindra Defence Systems were seen as potential partners.

With the focus now likely shifting to the indigenous WhAP, the project stands to become a prominent example of India’s growing self-reliance in the defence manufacturing sector.

I am sure the army haters will now come and still bash the army. "Why even test it?" "Why work on upgrades?" "Why even talk to US?"

I hope that Tata-Kestrel gets selected & invested-in by the Indian-Army.

This will give a major boost to Indian defence industry.

It seems US companies do not have any intention to actually provide any qualitative product to India.

As of now, we have seen either we got US products only in a very small quantity with too high a price, or the products are rejected as they failed in test trials, or the product is good but not yet available to India due to delays for so-called business reasons.

The US just wants to use these deals only to delay Indian imports from Russia.

The US has not yet become a reliable partner to India.

The reliability of the US is under question!

Actually, it's a justified question in this scenario. Since it was a non amphibious vehicle from start.

There could be a reasonable justification, no doubt. But still deserves a question here.

I believe there are tons of other badly needed American gear that India needs instead of the Stryker, so IA should opt for the TATA Kestrel instead, which carries a beefier engine plus amphibious capability and has already passed trials. If IA really wants then they can easily mount any air defence system or Javelin ATGMs or anti-drone systems on the Kestrel too.

This platform needed review for para forces commandos & certain urban to semi urban warfare context given both its fire power & electronics brings in a refreshingly fresh mindset offering.... India lacking para forces smart deployment along structured rapid action force logistics ( water & ailments of platforms / men ) is what makes internal security fluidity going .... notably entire border rim of India .... messed up approach !!!

There are multiple possibilities. Maybe the vendor misrepresented? Or MoD asked them to. But none of that is important. And not a question you can ask from Army. Army has rejected it, which means their intentions and actions are clean.

Put it in mountains as a buddy for Zorawar light tank , for new amphibians APCs , make a dedicated Marine corps , that is amphibious, a Bridge between land sea based force , expedition oriented, fast light , can attack from sea to land and vice versa . It will change a lot of dynamics as new front will open up and non can afford so many fronts , specially Pakistan.

Vendor misrepresented? Do you even hear what you're saying. It's not a small local wholesaler but one of the top defense vendor of the world. They don't misrepresent and Stryker is not a new vehicle. It's battle proven and specs are there since ages.

And it is a question that we can ask from army! Remember it's the robust mechanism of safeguards that keep army true. Otherwise we are all humans and Augusta Westland Scam and Chinese military purge should be sufficient reasons.

I am not saying it's corruption in Stryker but it's not a question that can't be asked.
The question is not about their intention but the necessity to have trials when it didn't meet their operational requirements since day 0.
And it's not limited to army but everybody involved in it.
Do you understand how much resources and time it wastes when we have indigenous option and other system waiting for trials and clearance approvals!

And it is important. That's what keeps our army better than their counterparts, cause they are accountable. Pak army isn't and their people behave similarly like you when asked even a simple question of army.

You are confusing operational freedom and autonomy with accountability. Don't.

The only reason why the USA is selling this vehicle to us now is because they are developing a brand new next generation armoured vehicle which will replace the Stryker. The USA is just trying to cash in on a pile of junk that has very old technology and equipment.

Currently we are developing our own 100% indigenous wheeled armoured vehicle which will outperform the Stryker in its capabilities. So far we have already developed the vehicle main body but now we are currently developing an unmanned turret. It will have a 30mm main canon, 2-4 ATGM, remote medium machine gun, automatic grenade launcher, anti drone device, loiter drone, surveillance drone, EW/ESM etc. It’s absolutely crucial that we replace the old BMP 2 turret which is very old with old technology.
