NEW DELHI - The Indian Army has finally begun receiving the highly anticipated AK-203 assault rifles from a joint Indo-Russian venture, marking a significant upgrade to its infantry arsenal.
Despite initial setbacks caused by the war in Ukraine and payment complications, 27,000 rifles have been delivered so far, with another 8,000 expected within the next two weeks. Over 10,000 rifles are already in the hands of military units, while others undergo inspection.
The joint venture, Indo-Russian Rifles Private Limited (IRRPL), established in Korwa, Uttar Pradesh, has successfully navigated these challenges and ramped up production. A key aspect of this deal is the technology transfer from Russia, which will enable India to manufacture over 6.1 lakh AK-203 rifles domestically.
The initial 70,000 rifles will have a phased increase in localization, starting at 5% and gradually reaching 70%. Eventually, all rifles produced will be 100% made in India. The goal is to achieve 70% indigenous content sooner than the originally planned two-year timeline.
To address the delays in the AK-203 production, India had previously procured 70,000 AK-103 rifles directly from Russia. These rifles have served as a stop-gap measure while domestic production gains momentum.
The induction of the AK-203 rifles is part of a broader effort to modernize the Indian Army's infantry equipment. These modern, reliable firearms are expected to significantly enhance the operational capabilities of soldiers on the front lines. The government's emphasis on indigenous manufacturing also aligns with its "Make in India" initiative.
The contract for the AK-203 rifles, worth over ₹5,000 crore, was signed in July 2021. The IRRPL joint venture involves the Indian firms Advanced Weapons and Equipment India Limited (AWEIL) and Munitions India Limited (MIL), along with Russia's Rosoboronexport and Kalashnikov. The AK-203 is a modernized version of the iconic AK-47 rifle, known for its durability and effectiveness in diverse combat environments.
The gradual increase in indigenous production of the AK-203 rifles is expected to boost India's defense manufacturing capabilities and reduce its reliance on foreign suppliers.
As the Indian Army continues to receive and deploy these advanced firearms, it signals a significant step forward in modernizing its infantry and enhancing its overall combat readiness.
