DRDO Gets Nod to Convert Stealth Wing Flying Testbed (SWiFT) Program into 1-Ton Full UCAV with Mini-Bomber and Surveillance Roles

In a significant advancement for India's unmanned combat aerial vehicle (UCAV) program, the Indian Air Force (IAF) has given the green light to the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) to transform the Stealth Wing Flying Testbed (SWiFT) into a fully operational 1-ton UCAV.

Initially designed as a technology demonstrator, SWiFT will now be developed to conduct mini-bomber strikes and intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) missions.

This decision reflects the IAF's growing emphasis on incorporating stealth unmanned platforms into its arsenal, recognizing their crucial role in modern warfare scenarios where survivability and precision are paramount.

SWiFT was originally intended to test key technologies in stealth, aerodynamics, and unmanned flight for future UCAV projects. With this new approval, it will transition into a frontline combat platform.

To enhance its stealth capabilities, the operational version of SWiFT will be equipped with an internal weapons bay, a hallmark of stealth aircraft design. This feature minimizes the aircraft's radar cross-section by concealing weapons internally, allowing it to carry precision-guided munitions while remaining undetected by enemy radar.

This advanced UCAV will be powered by Small Turbo Fan Engine (STFE), the same engine used in the Nirbhay cruise missile. This indigenously developed engine offers a compact design, ideal for maintaining SWiFT's stealthy profile, while providing ample power for a variety of missions, including deep strikes and ISR operations. The STFE's successful integration into the Nirbhay missile demonstrates its reliability and suitability for this new generation of unmanned systems.

With a payload capacity of 1 ton, SWiFT is envisioned as a versatile platform capable of fulfilling both offensive and reconnaissance roles. As a mini-bomber, it can deliver precision strikes against high-value targets deep within enemy territory while evading detection. Its ability to operate in contested airspace makes it a valuable asset for the IAF, particularly in situations where manned aircraft might face heightened risks.

Furthermore, SWiFT's advanced sensors and extended flight endurance make it well-suited for ISR missions. It can provide real-time intelligence to ground commanders, enhancing situational awareness and facilitating informed decision-making in dynamic operational environments.

The development of stealth UCAVs like SWiFT signifies a strategic shift in India's approach to aerial warfare, prioritizing the ability to operate undetected in the face of increasingly sophisticated air defence systems globally. These platforms offer not only enhanced survivability but also the capability to execute precision strikes and gather critical intelligence without endangering human lives.

This development aligns with a global trend towards unmanned systems in modern militaries. As noted by defence analysts, the use of UCAVs is rapidly increasing, with their ability to perform dull, dirty, and dangerous missions making them invaluable assets. The SWiFT program demonstrates India's commitment to remaining at the forefront of this technological advancement.

DRDO should make SWIFT a 2000 km range unmanned bomber and GHATAK a 5000 KM range unmanned bomber ! Also start manned bomber project like B-21 raider !

Very Good news , DRDO shines, Nice concept with Internal weapon bay , So called 4.5 Th Gen South korean KF-21 Lacks this Feature, After IN Now IAF have Full confidence & Support for Indigenous development , I have already menbtioned over last few months & MRFA too going to happen with Local production Line

Now swift far better thsn mq19. But fast track production needed. Easily all electonic pay load of tapas can move to it.

Great news. Since most of the components are already available locally, this project should not take much time to enter series production. I hope some private company will show interest in being lead integrator/manufacturer. I get the feeling that Swift and Ghatak will receive big orders as they'll be first stealth drone (aircraft) from India before AMCA comes as manned system. They would also be cheaper.
