Greece, India Explore Joint Negotiation for Rafale Fighter Jet Procurement

Rafale.jpg

In a strategic move, Greece has extended a proposal to India for a collaborative approach in negotiating the acquisition of additional Rafale fighter jets from French manufacturer Dassault Aviation. This proposition aims to harness the combined buying power of both nations to potentially secure a more advantageous deal.

Greece posits that a united front during negotiations would significantly bolster their bargaining power, potentially leading to a reduced price per jet. Such bulk purchase strategies are a well-established tactic employed by various nations to obtain discounts on high-value military equipment.

Both countries have expressed keen interest in acquiring more Rafale jets. Greece seeks to expand its air force capabilities following the successful integration of Rafale jets in a prior agreement. India's navy intends to procure 26 Rafale M fighters, while the country is also evaluating the Rafale as a strong contender in its MRFA tender for 114 additional fighter jets.

India is currently assessing Greece's proposal. Key considerations in this evaluation are likely to include potential cost reductions, delivery timelines, and any logistical challenges associated with a joint negotiation process.

Should this collaborative negotiation strategy prove successful, it could establish a precedent for future military acquisitions. It may encourage greater cooperation between nations with similar defence needs, leveraging collective buying power and optimizing procurement processes.

Nice move from greece , But India should Fast track MRFA process & Manufacture Rafale in India Under Make in India & from same plant Greece can get Rfale fighters . Dassault should see Indian Plant for Rafale for Export not just for Indian needs . Very Good opportunity for Three Nation France India & Greece . India should also discuss for Meteor Local production it can too can b export to Greece.& other nation Just Like ASRAAM .

Greeks are smart people.
Why did this never occur to our negotiators earlier?
Sab nau-sikhiye babu-log hi bhare hain negotiation board mei.
Because we have not done this kind of joint negotiation before. Even join development of military equipment is something we started doing recently.

india has been a lone wolf in regards to defence for long time. We could never rely on anyone.

European countries are used to this kind of jointness.

We don’t want 114 half Rafale’s for $17Bln, we want 114 Rafales fully locked and loaded with India specific enhancement, offset, 35-50%TOT, source code access to integrate Indian missiles, all for $17Bln.
As I said, whatever the price, Rafale are the cheapest planes we can get that can meet our requirements. What we want and for what price is for GoI to decide.

Because we have not done this kind of joint negotiation before.
i wonder what was stopping us from come up some such approach earlier.

how were we a lone wolf when we received ample support from the Soviets during our socialist days?
We could have collaborated with other states which purchased Soviet weaponry such as Yougoslavia, Egypt, etc.

our bureaucracy lacked foresightedness, that is the crux of the matter.

the support that we received from soviets was because we were willing to pay. Soviets didnt help us because ideology, like how they bank rolled north korea, or other communist countries.

Did you know that in 70s when India didnt have dollars to pay for weapons, we paid them in rice? That is right, we had to trade our food to get weapons from them. If not for the soviets willing to sell us weapons, we would have been truly alone. Our foreign policy was sheet back in those days

They understand after 30-40 years they can sell back these aircrafts in scrap condition with full price to IAF

On paper it looks good but wily France/Dassault/Safran have their own ways of stalling to get India and Greece into desperate situation w.r.t. fighter numbers and so they hurry up to order on their own.
France is very good at playing fighter sales games.
Not sold on it at all.

NEGATIVE Just go with F15EX make in India with Biden's graces including C130J-30's ; AbrahmsX FRCV ; STryker FICV & Javelin MPATGM's...

Whatever it will be, Rafale has always been L1. So the cost will be the lowest among all the options.

Are our Rafales same as Greek ones. I mean we had India specific enhancements right, will Greece require that. We want license production, so will Greece get India built Rafales.
And 40 years later, IAF will buy Greek Rafales at usd 300 millions price per unit of jet!!!

While there will be a lot of similar features the problem is that the technology, equipment, software and weapons will be very different.

Some of the features can be different. But most of the stuff will be similar. And this is about co-negotiations. Specs can be slightly different. Say, even India bought Su30 with vastly different configurations but negotiated them under the same deal. So this won’t be a big issue. All the planes are made by the same company and in the same factories, no?

This is an idea that would have been pursued if it was possible. While the jet fuselage, landing gear, engines etc will be very similar the problem is that the technology is very different as they use NATO standard while we have our own.

The problem will be that the technology like radars, sensors, software, EW, maybe a derated engine, missiles, bombs, instruments, towed decoy, IRST, encrypted software defined radios etc will be very different. Any technology that NATO uses will be unavailable to us as we are not part of NATO and the rules state that any technology, parts, components, sensors, weapons etc will have to be an inferior version to what NATO uses so that they can retain military superiority over any technology exported to a non NATO country.

den it will be $800 millions usd for each F15EX jet manufactured by Boeing-HAL full lifetime ops costs..REALLY.

We should also talk to UAE, Saudi,Brazil, Srilanka,Armenia,Greece Bangladesh, Philippines and Indonesia to get more buying power for future deals. We can get technology transfer and ensure they get lower price or other leverage like local indian missiles or any other upgrade.
