India has achieved a significant milestone in its nuclear deterrence capabilities with the successful test firing of the K-4 Submarine-Launched Ballistic Missile (SLBM) from its newly commissioned nuclear-powered submarine, INS Arighaat. This test, conducted on Wednesday 27 Nov, marks a crucial step in strengthening India's underwater strategic forces and its commitment to a credible minimum deterrent.

The K-4 missile, with a range of approximately 3,500 km, was launched from INS Arighaat off the coast of Visakhapatnam. This successful test follows years of development and trials, including previous tests from submerged platforms. It demonstrates India's growing expertise in SLBM technology and its ability to deploy these powerful weapons from its SSBN fleet.

The K-4 SLBM represents a significant advancement over the shorter-range K-15 missile, providing India with a more potent second-strike capability. This enhanced range allows India to effectively deter potential adversaries and maintain strategic stability in the region.

While some reports suggest this was the first K-4 test from INS Arighaat, earlier reports from 2022 indicated that the submarine had already conducted trials with both the K-15 and K-4 missiles. This recent test may therefore represent a further step in validating the K-4's full operational capability, potentially including a full-range test.

India's pursuit of advanced SLBM technology continues with the development of the K-5 missile, which is expected to have a range exceeding 5,000 km. This missile is likely to be deployed on future Arihant-class submarines and the upcoming S-5 class, further enhancing India's underwater nuclear deterrence.

As India strengthens its SSBN fleet and expands its missile capabilities, it remains committed to its no-first-use nuclear doctrine. The development and deployment of these advanced weapons systems underscore India's determination to maintain a credible minimum deterrent while adhering to principles of responsible nuclear stewardship.
