In a move to bolster its artillery firepower, the Indian Army has joined forces with the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IITD) to develop cutting-edge Sensor Fused Munitions (SFM) for its 155 mm artillery guns.

This collaboration, formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed on September 27, 2024, underscores the Army's commitment to modernization and self-reliance, as outlined in its 'ViksitBharat2047' initiative.

SFMs represent a significant leap forward in artillery technology. Unlike conventional munitions, SFMs are equipped with sophisticated sensors that enable them to autonomously detect and engage specific targets with pinpoint accuracy. This capability not only maximizes destructive power but also minimizes collateral damage, making them a crucial asset in modern warfare.

By partnering with IIT Delhi, the Indian Army aims to leverage the institution's renowned expertise in engineering and technology to create indigenous SFMs tailored to its specific operational needs.

The collaboration will focus on designing and developing SFMs compatible with the Army's existing 155 mm artillery systems, ensuring seamless integration and enhanced battlefield capabilities.

The development of SFM technology is a critical component of the Indian Army's broader modernization strategy. Equipping its artillery units with these advanced munitions will significantly enhance their ability to neutralize threats and safeguard national security.
