India's High Commissioner to Ottawa, Sanjay Kumar Verma, met with a local trade board in British Columbia, Canada, on Friday. However, the meeting took place under a cloud of controversy, as pro-Khalistan protesters gathered outside the venue in opposition to Verma's presence.
This visit marks Verma's first trip to Surrey since the assassination of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a leading pro-Khalistan figure, in June 2023. Reports indicate protesters actively attempted to interfere with the planned meeting.
Despite the tense atmosphere, Verma characterized the event as "successful" and "well-organized," although he acknowledged the expected protests. He also reported experiencing verbal abuse and witnessing disrespect towards the Indian flag during the demonstrations.
The call for protest was issued by the secessionist group Sikhs for Justice (SFJ), known for targeting Indian officials. Gurpatwant Pannun, SFJ's general counsel, declared Surrey a "war zone" and promised continued opposition to Verma.
