The Indian Navy's quest for six advanced submarines under Project 75I has reached a critical juncture with the completion of field evaluation trials (FET) for the two contenders, Germany's Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems (TKMS) and Spain's Navantia.

Both companies have offered unique submarine designs, with TKMS presenting their Class 214 and 212CD models in partnership with India's Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited, and Navantia showcasing their S80 class submarine in collaboration with Larsen & Toubro. A key requirement is the inclusion of air-independent propulsion (AIP) systems, which significantly enhance underwater endurance.

After evaluating TKMS' offering in Germany in March and Navantia's in Spain in June, the Indian Navy will now submit a comprehensive report to the Ministry of Defence. This report will determine the qualifying bids, a process expected to take two months.

The stakes are high, as the project is estimated at ₹43,000 crore (over $5 billion USD). Upcoming visits from German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Spanish President Pedro Sanchez underscore the diplomatic significance of this deal. Both leaders are expected to lobby for their respective countries' bids, highlighting the potential for strategic partnerships and technology transfer.

This project is crucial for India's naval modernization efforts, strengthening its maritime capabilities in the Indo-Pacific region. It also aligns with the nation's push for indigenous defense manufacturing, with a requirement for increasing domestic content in the submarines.

The final decision on this landmark deal is eagerly awaited and is expected to have a significant impact on India's defense capabilities and its role in the region.
