In a significant step towards bolstering its air defense capabilities and promoting self-reliance, the Indian Air Force (IAF) has received 15 RD-33 engines, manufactured indigenously by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), for its MiG-29UPG fighter jets. This rapid delivery, within a month of signing a ₹5300 crore contract, underscores the IAF's commitment to upgrading and extending the service life of its MiG-29 fleet to 2037.
The RD-33 engines are expected to significantly enhance the performance and lifespan of the MiG-29UPG aircraft, a modernized version of the MiG-29 that has been a mainstay of the IAF. This initiative aligns with India's focus on indigenization of defense equipment, reducing dependency on foreign suppliers, and fostering domestic manufacturing capabilities.
“The programme will focus on indigenisation of several high-value critical components, which would help increase the indigenous content of future repair and overhaul (ROH) tasks of RD-33 aero-engines,” the MoD said.
The IAF's decision to extend the service life of the MiG-29s to 2037 highlights the aircraft's continued relevance and value in the country's air defense strategy. The upgrade program, which includes enhancements in avionics, weapon systems, and engine performance, will ensure that the MiG-29UPG remains a potent and versatile fighter jet for years to come.
