Japan to Supply Advanced Naval Antennas to India, Bolstering Indo-Pacific Deterrence

TOKYO - Japan is set to supply advanced naval ship antennas to India, in a move aimed at enhancing defense capabilities and deterrence within the Indo-Pacific region.

This development, expected to be announced at the upcoming two-plus-two meeting between the foreign and defense ministers of both nations in New Delhi, marks a significant step in deepening defense cooperation between the two Quad allies.

The antennas, developed by Japanese companies including NEC, are currently deployed on the most advanced escort ships of the Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force. These cutting-edge systems are designed for the swift detection of missile and drone movements, capabilities critical in today's complex security environment.

The use of common equipment is expected to facilitate smoother information sharing and enhance coordination during joint defense exercises. This initiative comes at a time when India is actively seeking to diversify its defense procurement, reducing its historical reliance on Russia in light of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

The two-plus-two meeting, the first since September 2022, is also expected to reaffirm the commitment of both nations to uphold an international order based on the rule of law, particularly in the face of challenges posed by Russia's actions in Ukraine and China's military expansion.

Furthermore, Japan and India will likely agree to augment the scale and sophistication of their joint military exercises, including those conducted with fellow Quad members, the U.S. and Australia. This concerted effort underscores the Quad's growing role in ensuring stability and security in the Indo-Pacific.

India should also seek 10-12 US-2 shnimaywa Sea planes and IZUMU class warship tech from Japan !

I suspect that these antennae do not integrate into our present sensor suites. If so, this will be another logistical trail for us to manage.

Probably will be equipped in ngds. I dont think this will be equipped before that. Japanese frigates have this. But i dont think even nilgiri class frigates will have this.

What's your reason to say that ? Any references ?
Nilgiri class will start to come out from this year. I dont think a heavy communication and antenna will just suddenly be equipped over a ship just before its rollout and it will start to work flawlessly. These are the things that are decided even before design phase of a ship what sensors, antennas, radars, engines, sonar they will be equipped with.

And then it is still not signed, then talks of tot and producing in in India.

After observing annihilation of Russian navy in Black Sea, I think this antenna surely helps Indian Navy.
I hope that they import and manufacture locally for all Indian warships.

Our scientists have proved that they are good at assimilating foreign tech with our domestic tech. This is a tech which even china does not have

No references as such, but the sensor systems used on the Mogami-class (which carry these masts) are entirely Japanese, and these sensor systems are not used by India. Hence my point.

The Nilgiri-class won't. If we do end up getting the antenna though, the NGCs, NGDs, and P-17B frigates might have these instead.

India has a similar plan which was divided into two stages . Seems they have now droped it and is going for the Japanese tech. If it comes with tot then the decision is justified. This systems is a much needed one for our ships providing more stealth. once developed this should be used for all ships. Japan uses them in their Mogami class frigates.

That's OK, A Japanese warship is expected to have a Japanese suite, which is fine but does not mean it would not be compatible with Indian suites. May take some time for integration, but can work out.

Yes, thats what i mean, next gen warships, not the ones which are almost ready to be rolled out.

It’s very important that India at least manufactures this stealth antenna under a license with ToT. But we need to install these on the latest ships that we will manufacture from our next generation destroyer, frigates, corvettes and other smaller ships or boats.

At the same time India should learn more about developing this advanced look tealth antenna technology 100% indigenously with raw India materials. There is going to be a large requirement for these stealth antennas as we need to install it on a lot of ships.

The problem for Russian Navy is their antenna is not optimize for modern warfare and they always not using it 24/7 when they are at seas or any contested areas

I thought it is a collaboration between Japan and India.

This is quite good modern naval radar antenna mast.... We can't use Japanese specific hardware that's why we are in collaboration with Japan to integrate our Indian specific subsystems that can utilize this unicorn mast style radar from Nora 50... We don't have enough money to funding a full 100% technology transfer that's why we are in collaborative partnership to gain some technical information and knowledge
