Pakistani Officials Probe Killing of Acquitted Suspect in Sarabjit Singh's Prison Death

LAHORE, Pakistan – Authorities in Pakistan are investigating the fatal shooting of Amir Tamba, a man previously acquitted in the 2013 prison death of Sarabjit Singh, an Indian national accused of spying. The incident has the potential to reignite tensions between the two nuclear-armed neighbors.

Tamba was attacked Sunday by unidentified gunmen who entered his home in the eastern city of Lahore and fled on a motorbike. Pakistani military and intelligence officials have taken Tamba's body for further examination. Police have opened an investigation but have not yet disclosed a possible motive.

Sarabjit Singh, convicted of terrorism and spying by Pakistan in 1991, died after being attacked by fellow inmates in a Lahore prison. Tamba and another man were tried for Singh's death but were acquitted due to insufficient evidence in 2018. Singh's case caused significant diplomatic strain between India and Pakistan.

The killing has received limited coverage in Pakistani media, while Indian news outlets have reported extensively on the incident. Indian officials have not yet issued a statement.

This incident emerges amidst a backdrop of previous accusations from Pakistan alleging Indian intelligence involvement in killings within Pakistan. Furthermore, both the United States and Canada accused Indian agents of assassination plots on their soil last year, allegations which India has denied.
