Zenith’s Vijay-Z1 Drone Demonstrates Exceptional 78-Minute Flight Time at 14,000 Feet During Indian Army Trials

Hyderabad-based aerospace start-up Zenith Unmanned Systems has achieved a major milestone by successfully operating its Vijay-Z1 drone at 14,000 feet for one hour and 18 minutes.

The performance was recorded during high-altitude trials conducted in coordination with the Indian Army's Eastern Command in the rugged terrain of Arunachal Pradesh.

This achievement sets a new standard for small-class tactical drones flying in low-density air. Operating in mountainous regions presents massive challenges, as the lack of oxygen severely reduces aerodynamic lift and heavily strains drone propulsion systems.

Despite these hurdles, the Vijay-Z1 powered through adverse weather conditions, including thick fog and heavy rain, proving its robust build and engineering quality.

Built for forward-area operations, the Vijay-Z1 is a small tactical drone meant for reconnaissance, search and rescue, and continuous surveillance missions.

A 78-minute flight time at such extreme heights gives military commanders a significant tactical advantage. It allows for longer, uninterrupted monitoring of sensitive border sectors where harsh geography severely limits conventional aerial coverage.

Prior to this high-altitude test, the system proved its battery efficiency by flying for over two hours at mean sea level.

This successful demonstration strongly supports India's ongoing defence modernisation and the broader Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative.

Relying on indigenous equipment for critical border monitoring, especially in contested Himalayan zones like Ladakh, Siachen, and Arunachal Pradesh, allows the armed forces to reduce their dependence on imported military hardware.

Zenith Unmanned Systems, which was officially incorporated in April 2025, is quickly proving that local engineering can meet the strict operational demands of the military.

As the demand for high-altitude unmanned vehicles continues to grow for logistics, artillery spotting, and rapid response, platforms like the Vijay-Z1 offer a practical, home-grown solution.

By delivering real-time intelligence to ground forces in some of the world's most inhospitable environments, this drone marks a positive step forward for India's domestic defence manufacturing ecosystem.
