In a significant boost to India's indigenous missile manufacturing capabilities, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has achieved a major technological milestone.
The Solid State Physics Laboratory (SSPL) based in Delhi has successfully created and packaged 500-watt pulsed laser diode stacks.
Operating at a precise wavelength of 905 nanometres (nm), these advanced components are the core elements required for laser proximity fuzes used in modern tactical missile systems.
These high-power laser stacks will directly support key Indian missile programmes, most notably the Quick Reaction Surface-to-Air Missile (QRSAM) and the Next-Generation Anti-Radiation Missile (NGARM, often referred to as the Rudram series).
A laser proximity fuze is a highly sophisticated detonation mechanism that emits laser beams to accurately calculate the distance to an enemy target.
This ensures the missile's warhead detonates at the exact optimal distance to maximize damage, which is vital when engaging fast-moving aircraft or hostile radar installations.
To transition this technology from laboratory development to practical combat application, SSPL has delivered an initial batch of 50 prototype laser diode stacks to the Instruments Research and Development Establishment (IRDE) in Dehradun. IRDE will now subject the components to rigorous real-world trials and evaluations.
The official handover of the prototypes took place between Dr. Anesh Kumar Sharma, Director of SSPL, and Dr. Ajay Kumar, Director of IRDE, alongside Dr. Sudhir Khare and other senior DRDO scientists.
The engineering behind these new units involves precisely stacking multiple laser diode chips to achieve the necessary high-power output.
To guarantee that the fuzes can survive the extreme physical stress, heat, and vibration of a missile launch, the prototypes have been comprehensively tested to meet strict military (MIL) standards.
This successful development and subsequent handover marks a crucial step forward for India's self-reliance in high-power pulsed laser technology.
It highlights the seamless collaboration between multiple DRDO laboratories, combining their collective expertise in semiconductor design, fabrication, packaging, and system integration to produce cutting-edge defence technology for the Indian armed forces.
