Zero-Emission Shipping Revolution Begins: Steel Cut at Cochin Shipyard for Feeder Container Vessel

KOCHI, India – March 2, 2024 – Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) embarked on a new era of sustainable shipping today with the steel-cutting ceremony for the world’s first zero-emission feeder container vessel.

Powered by green hydrogen fuel cells, this project for Netherlands-based Samskip represents a major leap in reducing shipping's environmental impact.

The ceremony at CSL coincided with Samskip’s sustainability day celebrations in Rotterdam, highlighting the global commitment to a cleaner maritime future.

The innovative vessels will measure 138 meters long and 23 meters wide, capable of carrying approximately 365 high-cube 40-foot containers and boasting a deadweight tonnage of 8,000 tonnes.

When operating in “zero emission mode,” each vessel is projected to save around 25,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions annually, making a substantial contribution to a greener shipping industry.

The Green Hydrogen Advantage

Unlike traditional marine fuels, green hydrogen produces only water vapor when used, making it a true zero-emission solution. The fuel cells onboard the new vessel will generate electricity to power the ship's propulsion systems, revolutionizing container transport.

Global Implications

This zero-emission vessel signals a turning point in the fight against climate change. As the shipping industry seeks innovative ways to reduce its carbon footprint, hydrogen-powered ships could become the norm, leading to cleaner oceans and healthier coastal communities worldwide.

While the transition to green hydrogen presents challenges in terms of cost and infrastructure, this landmark project highlights the potential for transformative change in a vital global sector.

Let Cochin shipyard replicate this hydrogen power tech to power our Naval ships and carriers.

Na, no need for that. Sustainability and emissions has 0 relevance when it comes to military matters. Rich western militaries dont are about it, so no reason for India stress about it.

This kind of green tech is great for export because rich european countries are crazy about sustainability and being environment friendly right now. They will go heads over heels for these kinds of products. Some baltic and nordic states have already placed order for indian built ships.

Though this is not csl's design still csl will get all the experience in making such hydrogen vessels. This design can be used for indigenous hydrogen vessels development .The experience can lead to designing hydrogen vessels for coast guard and navy in the future.

US army is planning to convert all their ground carriers to electric.
it is all hypothetical. There is no concrete plan. recently abrams-x tank concept was displayed which is a hybrid. Battery operated tanks and armored vehicles are impractical right now.
