Advanced Akash Weapon System Ready for Large-Scale Series Production After Successful FOPM Completion by BDL

India's state-owned aerospace and weapons manufacturer, Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL), has successfully completed the First-off Production Model (FOPM) for the Advanced Akash Weapon System.

This major manufacturing milestone clears the path for the mass production and widespread deployment of this modernised air defence system by the Indian military.

According to a recent regulatory update, the newly advanced version of the Akash system features several improved sub-systems that significantly boost its combat efficiency.

Finishing the FOPM is a vital testing stage in the manufacturing process. It guarantees that BDL’s production facilities can reliably build systems that maintain the highest operational and quality standards for the armed forces.

Unlike early prototypes, which are often assembled by hand or with temporary equipment, a First-off Production Model is created using final, permanent factory tools and standard industrial methods.

This is an important distinction because it proves the factory can mass-produce the weapon system consistently without any drop in quality or changes to the original design.

Ultimately, this success confirms that BDL’s assembly lines are fully prepared for continuous, large-scale manufacturing.

In recent testing, the upgraded weapon system showed remarkable accuracy when targeting different types of airborne threats, proving its reliability in real-world combat situations.

These tests are part of a strict quality control and final approval process. They are necessary to confirm that the transition from a single prototype to factory-produced units has not caused any loss in performance or structural weakness.

With this achievement, BDL is expected to begin delivering the new systems to the Indian Army and the Indian Air Force very soon.

Originally designed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), the Advanced Akash takes the reliable foundation of the older surface-to-air missile and adds modern electronics and superior target-tracking technology.

This makes it highly effective against modern dangers, including fast-moving fighter jets, cruise missiles, and unmanned drones.

Defence experts note that this upgraded system will work in tandem with other long-range platforms, such as the S-400, to heavily strengthen India's multi-layered air defence network.

BDL is the primary manufacturer for the entire Akash network, which involves building the missiles, radar seekers, launch vehicles, and testing gear.

The company’s responsibilities also include long-term maintenance, repairs, and future upgrades for the military.

To support these growing defence requirements and an expanding order book, BDL is actively increasing its manufacturing capacity by establishing two new production facilities in Ibrahimpatnam (Telangana) and Jhansi (Uttar Pradesh), further solidifying its role in India's self-reliant defence sector.
