Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL), a state-run defence enterprise, recently released dual tenders to procure vital components for the Astra Mark-1 Beyond-Visual-Range Air-to-Air Missile (BVRAAM).

This step underscores a significant push to ramp up domestic missile manufacturing, meeting the growing combat needs of both the Indian Air Force and the Indian Navy.

Boosting the Indigenous Arsenal

Designed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), the Astra Mk-1 boasts a strike range of 110 kilometres and blistering speeds of Mach 4.5.

The newly issued tenders focus on acquiring "PT Blanks" — highly precise metallic forms essential for building the outer casing of the missile's solid-propellant rocket motor.

These parts must meet exacting metallurgical standards to endure the extreme pressures of high-speed flight.

Issued under the Ministry of Defence's Department of Defence Production, these parallel procurements aim to feed assembly lines at BDL’s Kanchanbagh plant in Hyderabad and the Ordnance Factory Medak in Telangana.

Splitting the requirement into two lots is a strategic move to ensure smooth production schedules, diversify the vendor base, and manage manufacturing cycles efficiently.

Tender Specifics and Bulk Production

The primary tender (GeM Reference ID 9305999) requests 907 PT Blank units to be delivered within 90 days of finalizing the contract.

A supplementary tender (Reference ID 55434609) calls for another 137 units for reserve inventory or parallel assembly. Both bids close on May 21, 2026.

This combined bulk requirement highlights BDL's commitment to sustaining a robust, uninterrupted production pipeline for the armed forces.

Bolstered by massive recent acquisitions — including a ₹2,900 crore order from the Ministry of Defence — BDL is steadily scaling its output capacity to deliver between 50 and 100 Astra missiles annually.

Cross-Platform Integration

The Astra Mk1 is actively replacing imported systems like the Russian R-77 and French MICA.

While already fully operational on the frontline Su-30MKI fighter fleet, the 154-kilogram weapon is steadily being adapted for India's Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas Mk1A and the Indian Navy's aircraft carrier-based MiG-29K jets.

Vendors bidding for these tenders face stringent quality and machining standards set by the DRDO.

However, to encourage local industry participation, qualified Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in the defence sector have been granted exemptions from standard deposit requirements.

As indigenous projects like Astra, Akash, QRSAM, and BrahMos enter large-scale serial production, India's domestic defence manufacturing ecosystem continues to mature rapidly, establishing the Astra family as a crucial pillar of the nation's air superiority for the coming decade.
