India has entered the elite club of nations possessing hypersonic missile technology with the recent successful test of its Long-Range Hypersonic Missile by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). This achievement marks a significant leap forward in India's defence capabilities and has the potential to reshape the strategic balance in the Indo-Pacific region.

The missile, launched from Dr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Island off the coast of Odisha, achieved an impressive speed of Mach 6, or six times the speed of sound. This places it in the category of hypersonic missiles, which are defined by their ability to travel at speeds exceeding Mach 5 (approximately 6,100 km/h). Crucially, the missile also demonstrated "terminal manoeuvres" – the ability to change trajectory mid-flight – making it extremely difficult to intercept.

It was supposed to do Mach 10, may be the canister lid reduced the speed, for security reasons also they might purposely mask the original speed and provide wrong specs.

Most experts think India notoriously underplays their missile ranges already as to not spook friendly countries and surprise adversaries in a full scale conflict. Many experts have noted some missiles being overbuilt for their stated range.

The missile easily weighs several tonnes. For eg Agni V weighs 50T. The lid probably weighs what 50kg ? You seriously think the missile with explosive rocket fuel pushing through is going to be retarded by a flimsy lid ?

yes Mach 6 is at sweet spot. Same we did with Rudram. Because if you go higher, then it will lose its accuracy and lose all its comms and sensors because of the plasma cloud. Even Brahmos itself is extremely difficult to intercept. So this Mach6 is a game changer for us
 
I mentioned here sometime ago that India has some other advanced tech that surpasses Brahmos. Thats why we are looking at exporting & proliferating it. Now it makes sense. I bet we have already operationalized this new thing and ready to go.

India does not need to challenge the US now.
It needs decades of solid economic growth and an economy that comes within striking range of China and US. ( even then ourt per capita remains low ).
Let India silently develop its tech and economy and punch in geopolitics where its needed.

We are at ~ 4 trillion US $. which means this has a potential of going up to 10 tr USD $ in 10 more years to come( mid 2030s) . which is a good point for us.
economies which reach this point grow very fast. but we haver to careful our growth rate does not fall down to 3-4 % and remains at least 7-8 % YoY.

if the aerodynamics is disturbed there is a possiblity, hypersonic missile follows a ballistic trajectory in the initial phase, it travels straight up, the lid would have stayed until the missile bent and traveled in a flatter glide phase and here the missile maneuvers and only in the beginning of the second phase the lid would have fallen according to my guess.
 
This is a great start but we also need to increase the range. We should deploy this with the army, navy and crucially with the air force. This will allow us to move and strike targets very quickly across India.
