Opinion How India's Hypersonic Missile with Mach 6 Speed and 2000km Range Can Deter China-Pak Nexus in IOR

India has entered the elite club of nations possessing hypersonic missile technology with the recent successful test of its Long-Range Hypersonic Missile by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). This achievement marks a significant leap forward in India's defence capabilities and has the potential to reshape the strategic balance in the Indo-Pacific region.

The missile, launched from Dr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Island off the coast of Odisha, achieved an impressive speed of Mach 6, or six times the speed of sound. This places it in the category of hypersonic missiles, which are defined by their ability to travel at speeds exceeding Mach 5 (approximately 6,100 km/h). Crucially, the missile also demonstrated "terminal manoeuvres" – the ability to change trajectory mid-flight – making it extremely difficult to intercept.

This breakthrough has significant implications for India's defence posture, particularly in the context of its increasingly complex relationship with China and Pakistan. The missile's estimated range of 1,500-2,000 km covers a vast swathe of the Indian Ocean, enabling it to target enemy warships and other high-value assets at considerable distances from the Indian coastline. This capability is crucial for maintaining dominance in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR), a critical area for naval operations and trade routes.

The hypersonic missile's speed and maneuverability offer a decisive advantage in naval warfare. It reduces the reaction time for adversaries, allowing India to strike enemy targets before they can deploy countermeasures. This capability acts as a powerful deterrent, potentially discouraging any aggressive actions by China or Pakistan in the region.

The development of this missile is also significant in the context of the global hypersonic arms race. Currently, only Russia and China possess operational hypersonic missiles. India's entry into this exclusive club underscores its position as a major player in the evolving landscape of modern warfare.

This successful test is a culmination of years of research and development, including the 2020 test of the Hypersonic Technology Demonstration Vehicle (HSTDV), which achieved Mach 6 for 23 seconds. The Long-Range Hypersonic Missile builds on this foundation, showcasing India's ability to innovate and overcome complex technological challenges.

As India continues to refine and deploy this hypersonic missile, it is poised to significantly enhance its deterrence capabilities and strengthen its position in the Indo-Pacific region. This development has the potential to alter enemies strategic calculus in the region and contribute to maintaining peace and stability.

While India's missile program adheres to the regulations of the Missile Technology Control Regime (MTCR), the development of this hypersonic missile sends a clear message about India's determination to defend its sovereignty and interests. It is a testament to the country's growing technological prowess and its commitment to indigenous defence solutions.

the speed at mac 8 bottom end of the scale, anything 10 onwards acceptable, range to enhance 6000km to cover entire china

Indians are indeed formidable. In order to avoid revealing their true strength, they put on a "hat" to fly missiles.

It was supposed to do Mach 10, may be the canister lid reduced the speed, for security reasons also they might purposely mask the original speed and provide wrong specs.

We didnt even know that this thing was in the works. Very good surprise. Now what needs to be done is develop truck based, ship based and air launched versions of this weapon. Maybe even submarine launched version

create a undergdrround launching system on thar desert , track of himalayas , niligiri hills cosat of oddisa and inside manipur dense forest all underground command

Congrates DRDO Further refinements will extend the Range upto 2000 kM Amazing work by DRDO
Most experts think India notoriously underplays their missile ranges already as to not spook friendly countries and surprise adversaries in a full scale conflict. Many experts have noted some missiles being overbuilt for their stated range.

It is a Landmark achievement as as per a trusted YouTube channel on defence our hypersonic missile tip is delta wing cone which is highly manuvararble, considering that Mach 6 is very good achievement as it can hit a moving target like ship unlike non manuvararble but Mach 10 Mach 15 hypersonic missile. Finally I request the other members to watch YouTube channel Alpha defense Hindi. It is a trustworthy informative channel on defense related matters

may be the canister lid reduced the speed
The missile easily weighs several tonnes. For eg Agni V weighs 50T. The lid probably weighs what 50kg ? You seriously think the missile with explosive rocket fuel pushing through is going to be retarded by a flimsy lid ?

yes Mach 6 is at sweet spot. Same we did with Rudram. Because if you go higher, then it will lose its accuracy and lose all its comms and sensors because of the plasma cloud. Even Brahmos itself is extremely difficult to intercept. So this Mach6 is a game changer for us

I mentioned here sometime ago that India has some other advanced tech that surpasses Brahmos. Thats why we are looking at exporting & proliferating it. Now it makes sense. I bet we have already operationalized this new thing and ready to go.

India does not need to challenge the US now.
It needs decades of solid economic growth and an economy that comes within striking range of China and US. ( even then ourt per capita remains low ).
Let India silently develop its tech and economy and punch in geopolitics where its needed.

too much chest thumping can prove counter intuitive for us at the moment.
We are at ~ 4 trillion US $. which means this has a potential of going up to 10 tr USD $ in 10 more years to come( mid 2030s) . which is a good point for us.
economies which reach this point grow very fast. but we haver to careful our growth rate does not fall down to 3-4 % and remains at least 7-8 % YoY.

if the aerodynamics is disturbed there is a possiblity, hypersonic missile follows a ballistic trajectory in the initial phase, it travels straight up, the lid would have stayed until the missile bent and traveled in a flatter glide phase and here the missile maneuvers and only in the beginning of the second phase the lid would have fallen according to my guess.

This is a great start but we also need to increase the range. We should deploy this with the army, navy and crucially with the air force. This will allow us to move and strike targets very quickly across India.
