Indian Air Force (IAF) Chief Air Chief Marshal AP Singh conducted a familiarization flight aboard the Airbus A400M during his official visit to France, evaluating its potential to fulfill the IAF's Medium Transport Aircraft (MTA) requirements.

The visit marks a key step in India’s ongoing push to modernize its airlift fleet and phase out its aging transport aircraft, including the Il-76 & An-32 aircraft.

Key Highlights of the Assessment

1. Firsthand Evaluation: ACM AP Singh flew the Airbus A400M at the Orléans Air Base, directly assessing the aircraft's operational capabilities and performance.

2. MTA Requirements: The IAF plans to procure between 40 and 80 new military transport aircraft, with the A400M emerging as a major contender against other options like the Embraer KC-390 Millennium.

3. Broader Indo-French Engagements: Beyond the A400M, the Chief's three-day itinerary included strategic dialogues with his French counterpart, General Jérôme Bellanger, and discussions on local maintenance ecosystems and engine manufacturing with aerospace companies like Dassault, Safran, and Thales.

As per media reports, India plans to issue the RFP for the MTA Program in the coming months with a final decision likely in 2027.
