In response to a surge in attacks targeting unarmored military vehicles by Pakistani-backed terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir, the Indian Army is moving to procure additional Tata Wheeled Armoured Personnel Carriers (WhAPCs). These vehicles are expected to significantly enhance troop safety in high-risk zones, providing crucial mobility and protection during combat operations.

The Tata WhAPC is a versatile 4x4 Armoured Personnel Carrier (APC) designed for multi-role capabilities. It offers robust mine protection and can be configured for various operational needs, including:
  • Troop transport: Providing safe passage for soldiers in counter-insurgency operations.
  • Special response: Serving as a reliable platform for law enforcement and security forces.
  • Convoy protection: Escorting and safeguarding convoys in conflict zones.
The WhAPC has already proven its effectiveness in UN Peacekeeping Missions and domestic operations with Indian security forces. Tata offers a range of configurations tailored to specific mission requirements, including Infantry Carrier, Command Post, and Ambulance Rescue. These configurations are adapted from the Quick Reaction Force Vehicles (QRFV-Medium) already in service, incorporating enhanced features for increased protection and operational efficiency.

The decision to procure additional WhAPCs comes in the wake of increased terrorist activity in Jammu and Kashmir, including ambushes and IED attacks targeting military personnel. The induction of these armored vehicles will significantly bolster troop protection by providing:
  • High levels of mine and ballistic protection: Shielding soldiers from IEDs, small arms fire, and shrapnel.
  • Enhanced mobility: Allowing troops to navigate challenging terrain and respond quickly to threats.
  • Improved situational awareness: Providing better visibility and communication capabilities.
By investing in these modern armored vehicles, the Indian Army is taking a proactive step to protect its soldiers and enhance their operational effectiveness in the face of evolving threats in Jammu and Kashmir. This procurement underscores the commitment to ensuring the safety and security of troops operating in challenging environments.

Instead of using jeeps which are utterly defenseless, army should order more of these for the protection of our soldiers.

Jeep is the most versatile personnel carrier in the cantonment and general Army use. Insurgency in Kashmir require a heavy mine proof vehicle, which Jeep is not.

They are being procured, along with many other types of armored vehicles. But that can’t happen in a day. And this focus on infantry only started around 2018 or so, after Manohar Parikkar left office. BPJs, helmets, armored vehicles, all those are being procured but will take years before we have enough.

India needs to keep on upgrading its old military vehicles with Mahindra and Tata as there’s a lot of variety and options. We need troops to be safe inside but also able to fight when needed. They should place a 20-30mm machine gun on top whenever we need to use it. We should make it a man less turret that can be remotely controlled from inside.

TATA and Ashoka Leyland must make armored protected trucks instead of open trucks for amry movement, As well as convert all present trucks in Armored protected trucks !
