The Indian Army is embracing the digital age by incorporating specialized expertise into its ranks. Deputy Chief of Army Staff Lieutenant General Rakesh Kapoor announced a new initiative to recruit domain experts in cyber warfare, information technology, and linguistics, recognizing the evolving nature of conflict and the crucial role technology plays on the modern battlefield.
Lt Gen Kapoor highlighted the Army's commitment to adapting its structure, strategy, and operational approach to meet the challenges of 21st-century warfare. This includes recruiting specialists in critical areas like information warfare, cybersecurity, and IT at both officer and non-commissioned officer (NCO) levels.
A successful pilot project has paved the way for regular recruitment of domain experts. The first phase will include 17 specialized entry schemes, with five specifically for strategic linguistic experts. Officers will be recruited at the postgraduate level, while soldiers will be inducted with a graduate degree. The selection process will include Service Selection Board (SSB) interviews, and advertisements for the new entries are expected soon. The recruitment drive will be open to both men and women, ensuring gender neutrality in the armed forces.
This initiative expands upon the Territorial Army's (TA) existing practice of inducting domain experts, bringing this specialized talent into the regular Army.
Technology as a Force Multiplier
Lt Gen Kapoor emphasized the importance of technology, stating that the Defence Ministry has declared 2024-25 as the "Years of Technology Absorption" for the Indian Army. To spearhead this vision, the Army is focusing on 16 technology clusters, including:- Cybersecurity and Quantum Computing
- 5G/6G Networks and IoT
- Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, and Deep Learning
- Directed Energy Weapons and Robotics
- RPA (Remotely Piloted Aircraft), Counter-UAS, and Loitering Munitions
- Blockchain Technology and 3D Printing

Lt Gen Kapoor highlighted the symbiotic relationship between technology and military strategy, stating that these initiatives aim to transform the Indian Army into a "niche, technology-driven force capable of meeting evolving security challenges."By proactively integrating technology and specialized expertise, the Indian Army is not only preparing for future wars but also positioning itself as a potential global leader in defence innovation. This forward-thinking approach will ensure the Indian Army remains a formidable and adaptable force in a rapidly changing world.
