Indian Army's Plans to Induct 114 Dhanush Artillery Gun by March 2026 May Face Delays Due to Slow Production

The Indian Army's ambitious plan to induct 114 indigenously developed Dhanush artillery guns by March 2026 is facing significant hurdles due to production delays, according to officials close to the project. The setbacks raise concerns about the timely modernization of the Army's artillery capabilities.

Advanced Weapon Equipment India Limited (AWEIL), the manufacturer responsible for producing the Dhanush guns at the Gun Carriage Factory (GCF) in Jabalpur, has struggled to meet delivery targets. While the first batch of six guns was handed over in April 2019, subsequent production was hampered by a shortage of critical spare parts, leading to a production halt.

As of 2024, only one regiment equipped with the Dhanush system is operational, deployed along the northern borders with China. While Army sources remain hopeful that the remaining regiments will be delivered by 2026, concerns are growing about meeting this deadline.

The Dhanush, a 155 mm, 45-calibre towed artillery gun, boasts a range of 36 kilometers, extendable to 38 kilometers with specialized ammunition. As an upgraded version of the Bofors FH 77 gun, a reliable workhorse in the Indian Army's arsenal, the Dhanush is expected to significantly enhance firepower. Notably, the gun has 80% indigenous content, aimed at simplifying maintenance and reducing reliance on foreign suppliers.

The slow pace of Dhanush gun deliveries comes at a time when the Indian Army is actively seeking to enhance its artillery capabilities. In addition to the Dhanush, the army is also in the process of procuring other 155mm gun systems, including the Advanced Towed Artillery Gun System (ATAGS), the Mounted Gun System (MGS), and the Towed Gun System (TGS). It has already commissioned 100 K9 Vajra-T guns, highlighting the ongoing efforts to modernize its artillery.

Of course it is delayed. What's the surprise? That's Indian defence PSUs for you. Can't build a small number of artillery guns on time, but will promise they can deliver the sky ahead of schedule.

Which components are still imported for Dhanush?. List them out, Iam sure most of these systems can be produced in India. They keep some portion to be always import dependent so that in case of delays they can blame international situations.

When our army was conducting trials of artillery guns offered by manufacturers all over the world, OFB was sleeping on the drawing blue prints of Bofors gun. In 2010-11 when Bharat Forge unveiled Bharat52, the OFB suddenly woke up from it's slumber. They informed MOD that they have found the drawing blue prints and also assembled a 155mmx45cal gun (Dhanush). MOD promptly asked IA to test it. Thereafter 114 units were ordered in 2015, tested & cleared for delivery - but OFB has been able to supply only 24-30 units till date. What surprises me is why IA didn't protest. It is not protesting the slow deliveries of upgraded Sharang guns also.

The problem was never shortage of spare parts. the problem was poor quality. IA had to initiate retrials of the system.

Military can't protest slow deliveries by any DPSU as MoD won't allow it. But when it comes to private companies, MoD will encash the bank guarantees in a jiffy. Socialism for you.

Sell all non performing erstwhile OFB companies to the private sector. Just like Air India. Under management of comoanies like Tata, Kalyani, and L&T, they will be transformed.

what will happen even after protest? People advocating DPSU must see this side of HAL/OFB/Shipyards who never honor their own promised deadline.

Our army has only 2 options: import weapons so that they can function, or go to DPSUs to be screwed by low quality and extremely late weapon deliveries. You can see which you would prefer if you were a general.

Disagree brother. We have a 3rd option now with TATA, Kalyani achieving expertise in Artillery manufacturing. But our process, practice, import mentality & requirements to maintain white elephants (DPSUs) will always be hurdles in procurement & modernisation
