Why IAF Not Procuring More New Su-30MKI Fighters as AMCA, Tejas Mk2 and Super Sukhoi Upgrade Takes Center Stage


A recent ₹13,500 crore contract awarded to Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) for 12 new Su-30MKI fighter jets has sparked discussions about the Indian Air Force (IAF) and its future fleet composition.

These new aircraft, which will be built at HAL's Nashik facility with over 62% indigenous content, are strictly meant to replace jets lost in accidents over the past two decades.

Despite calls from aviation enthusiasts for a much larger procurement, sources suggest the IAF is deliberately avoiding massive new orders for the heavy fighter due to shifting warfare dynamics and a clear focus on modernising its current inventory.

The Shift in Aerial Warfare​

Since its introduction, the Su-30MKI has served as the primary workhorse of India's aerial combat power.

With around 260 of these long-range air superiority fighters currently active, it is the largest fleet in the IAF. The platform has consistently proven its versatility and striking power.

However, modern aerial combat is undergoing a massive transformation, prompting military planners to reconsider how large, fourth-generation fighters fit into the battles of tomorrow.

A major concern raised by seasoned aviators is the ability of heavy fighters to survive in highly protected and contested airspace. The Su-30MKI possesses a significant radar cross-section, making it relatively easy for advanced integrated air-defence networks to detect.

As future conflicts will likely heavily rely on stealth technology, networked warfare, and long-range precision strikes, the IAF is shifting its focus toward platforms with reduced radar signatures.

Future indigenous platforms, particularly the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA), are designed specifically to operate safely in these dangerous environments.

High Sustainment Costs​

Beyond tactical capabilities, the financial and logistical burden of operating the existing fleet is a deciding factor.

Keeping the large Su-30MKI fleet flight-ready has historically presented serviceability challenges, largely due to the maintenance-heavy AL-31FP thrust-vectoring engines and complex Russian avionics. As the aircraft age, the cost of keeping them operational rises.

Consequently, defence planners find it more economical to invest in next-generation fighters that feature modern digital systems and lower maintenance requirements, rather than adding more older-generation airframes to the inventory.

The Super Sukhoi Overhaul​

To maximise the potential of the aircraft it already owns, the IAF is pushing forward with the comprehensive "Super Sukhoi" upgrade programme.

Approved for an initial batch of 84 fighters at an estimated cost of ₹65,000 crore, this massive overhaul will be executed domestically by HAL.

The crown jewel of this upgrade is the indigenous Virupaksha Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) radar, which recently completed its first flight test.

Built on cutting-edge Gallium Nitride (GaN) technology, this new radar will vastly improve the jet's ability to detect and track distant targets, including stealth platforms.

Alongside new electronic warfare suites, improved avionics, and modern mission computers, these enhancements are designed to keep the Su-30MKI fleet lethal and relevant well into the 2040s and beyond.

Prioritising Indigenous Innovation​

This procurement strategy also aligns perfectly with India’s broader push for self-reliance in defence manufacturing.

Massive financial and industrial resources are currently being funnelled into the development of the Tejas Mk2 and the fifth-generation AMCA.

While the Su-30MKI programme successfully brought licensed manufacturing to India, building fully indigenous next-generation fighters yields far greater technological benefits.

By backing the Tejas Mk2 and AMCA, the government aims to mature the domestic aerospace industry, nurture local design expertise, and drastically cut down the nation's reliance on foreign defence suppliers.

Ultimately, the reluctance to buy dozens of new Su-30MKIs does not diminish the aircraft's crucial role in national security.

The heavy fighter will undoubtedly remain the cornerstone of India’s air defence strategy for decades, backed by its impressive payload capacity and unmatched combat experience.

Moving forward, the IAF is balancing its immediate need for numbers with a long-term vision—choosing to aggressively upgrade its existing fighters while reserving major funds for the stealthy, next-generation jets of the future.
 
The condition of the SU-30MKI aircraft seems far from ideal with parts of the aircraft without paint or repainted unprofessionally... To be the best we cannot forget to do the little things that make the whole .. ! I guess stealth coating on IAF aircraft can be expected to be a reality maybe in 2050 or later..!!
 
Is stealth that important. You now fire weapons fron 200 to 300 km away.

We could use another 100. Their chap but effective and India has ecosystem and mastered upgrades and repairing facilities.

Most of the US airforce are F16 and F15C. 1000 aircraft.
 
Why can’t they use the same engine as a single engine and create a sleath frame around it along with modern avionics and radar atleast as a stop gap arrangement … This salvation has to be swallowed due to the red tape and indecisive both atIAF and govt end .
