Mojtaba Khamenei, an Iranian Shia cleric & politician and son of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has been appointed as the new and third Supreme Leader of Iran which is set to further complicate the overall strategic calculus of the war in Iran going forward. Long considered the "power behind the robes," he is viewed by analysts as a hardliner and likely to seek revenge for his family’s deaths and continue his father's confrontational policies with the West.

He succeeds his father, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was killed in joint United States and Israeli airstrikes on February 28, 2026. Before his formal appointment, Mojtaba was a highly influential "powerbroker" and "gatekeeper" who has been operating effectively the Office of the Supreme Leader for nearly two decades behind the scenes.

As the Supreme Leader, he holds the final & ultimate authority over all state matters, including foreign policy and the military. Born in 1969 in Mashhad, he is the second-eldest of Ali Khamenei's six children. He has been appointed by the 88-member Assembly of Experts following an extraordinary session.

Further, he has strong military ties & maintains deep connections with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), which is seen as a key factor in his consolidation of power. While long considered a mid-ranking cleric (Hojjatoleslam), he was reportedly elevated to the rank of Ayatollah leading up to his selection to meet the constitutional requirements for leadership.

His appointment marks the first time power has passed from father to son since the 1979 Revolution, leading to internal and external criticism that the Islamic Republic is evolving into a hereditary monarchy.

His ascension has been welcomed by allies, like Russia and the Houthis, while the U.S. has signaled significant opposition. However, the U.S. President Trump is miffed with the development. He has stated in interviews with Axios and TIME that he is "not happy" with the selection and will not accept another member of the Khamenei family. He further warned that if a new leader does not receive U.S. approval, they are "not going to last long". Israeli officials have also warned that any successor to the late Ayatollah remains a target for elimination.

Iranian officials, however, have dismissed Trump's demands, stating that the selection is strictly an internal matter for the Iranian people, who came out in large numbers to celebrate his appointment, thereby, dashing any remaining hopes of a public uprising and regime overthrow as being expected by Trump.

The stage, thus, is set for another round of shadow & overt war to play out simultaneously with another hardliner, and an injured survivor of airstrikes out to seek vengeance, at the seat of power in Iran and Trump-Netanyahu alliance set to eliminate him under their stated objective of war as political regime change...
