After Years of Setbacks, HAL's IJT-36 Sitara Neo Star Nears User Trials and Final Certification for Air Force, Set to Shine at Aero India 2025

Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) is poised to make a significant announcement at Aero India 2025 with the unveiling of its modernized Intermediate Jet Trainer (IJT-36), the "Sitara" Neo Star. This revamped aircraft boasts substantial upgrades, notably in its avionics suite, and is expected to be a highlight of the upcoming air show.

Sources indicate that the "Sitara" Neo Star will not only sport a striking new livery but will also showcase advanced technology designed to fulfill contemporary training requirements. The aircraft has been equipped with state-of-the-art avionics, including cutting-edge navigation systems, digital flight controls, and enhanced communication capabilities. These improvements aim to provide trainee pilots with a more realistic and immersive combat training environment.

The IJT-36 program, initiated in the early 2000s, has faced a series of challenges, particularly with its airframe design. Early spin trials revealed critical flaws, leading to significant setbacks and casting doubt on the project's future. However, HAL, in collaboration with international partners, has diligently addressed these issues in recent years. Modifications to the airframe have successfully resolved the spin trial concerns, marking a crucial step towards final certification.

Recent images reveal the aircraft sporting a vibrant new paint scheme, symbolizing a renewed commitment to the program and its importance in HAL's trainer aircraft lineage. With the airframe issues resolved, the "Sitara" Neo Star is now undergoing rigorous testing of its upgraded avionics suite. These tests are crucial to ensure the aircraft meets all operational requirements before it proceeds to user trials with the Indian Air Force (IAF).

Sources suggest that the IJT-36 is on the verge of receiving final certification. Following successful user trials, HAL anticipates the aircraft will enter full-scale production by 2028. This timeline is, however, contingent on the completion of the trials and final approval from the IAF.

The "Sitara" Neo Star is designed to bridge the gap between basic pilot training and advanced combat aircraft operations. Its successful induction into the IAF will significantly enhance the training capabilities of the Air Force, ensuring pilots are better equipped for the complexities of modern air combat. The aircraft's progress represents a major achievement for HAL and a crucial step towards India's self-reliance in defence technology.

Every small thing getting twenty years 30 years is very ridiculous.
One hand china integrating tech only in three to four years.
The permissions, approvals funds allotment taking the redtapism kind things are never leave us

Ah, yes. We have reached the point where this failed dead horse of a project now needs an avionics upgrade, but is still nowhere near induction.

HAL will just use these upgrades as an excuse to delay this failed project by another two decades.

Scrap the damned thing, document in great detail what went right and what went wrong, procure or lease a few interim jet trainers, and start work on the HLFT-42 with the lessons from the HJT-36 in mind.

Looks like a bad design has been reworked so many times, by so many different players that it has left this bird looking dead ugly. They need 3 years for user testing at this rate; there is zero hope for AMCA and MKII coming to production. This is a tiny trainer, and these boffins at HAL have just struggled to get it to do simple tasks; won't be surprised if sometime HAL will try to project this as MUMT, just watch this IJT Sitara soap unfold. Looks like the entire HAL team of IJT started learning Aeronautical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Instrumentation, and fabrication as OJT on the IJT.

How I wish design engineers in HAL involved in this project could have come up with a design that this combat trainer resembles like a fighter aircraft to attract potential customers.

What is the status of HTT40 now? There is a complete silence ot since long..
