AK-203 Rifles To Be Fully 'Made in India' from Dec 2024 as Kanpur Factory Develops Metal Meeting Russian GOST Standards

In a significant boost to India's "Make in India" initiative and its pursuit of self-reliance in defense manufacturing, the Small Arms Factory (SAF) in Kanpur has achieved a major breakthrough.

After months of dedicated research and development, the factory, in collaboration with its metal suppliers, has successfully produced a unique metal that meets the stringent GOST (Gosstandart) standards required for the production of Russian weapons, including the AK-203 assault rifle. This development paves the way for the complete indigenization of AK-203 rifle production in India by December 2024.

This achievement marks a turning point in India's journey towards self-sufficiency in small arms production. Previously, the production of AK-203 rifles at the Indo-Russian Rifles Private Limited (IRRPL) facility in Amethi, Uttar Pradesh, relied on metal imported from Russia. While the rifles were assembled in India, the reliance on foreign-sourced raw materials meant that they were not truly "Made in India."

Surendra Pati Yadav, General Manager of SAF, highlighted the significance of this development in an interview with News18. He stated that the first batch of AK-203 rifles produced at the IRRPL facility did include components sourced from Russia. However, with the successful development of this new metal, all future batches of the rifle will be entirely indigenous. "The batches of AK-203 rifles that will be released after December 2024 will be fully indigenous, with all components—right from the barrel to the springs—manufactured locally," Yadav explained.

The journey to achieving this milestone was not without its challenges. Developing a metal that matched the high standards set by Russian GOST regulations required extensive research, trials, and adjustments. The team of metallurgy experts and technicians had to create a material significantly different from what was used in existing Indian-made weapons. Yadav described the moment of success as a "Eureka moment" for the entire team.

This breakthrough is not only a testament to the capabilities of Indian engineers and scientists but also a significant step towards reducing India's dependence on foreign suppliers for critical defense equipment. The indigenization of the AK-203 rifle production will ensure a consistent and reliable supply of these crucial weapons for the Indian Armed Forces, strengthening the nation's defense capabilities.

The IRRPL, a joint venture between India's Advanced Weapons and Equipment India Limited (AWEIL) and Russia’s Kalashnikov Concern, was established in 2019 to manufacture AK-203 assault rifles for the Indian Armed Forces. The project aims to produce over 770,000 AK-203 rifles, with the majority being manufactured locally at the Korwa factory in Amethi.

well done SAF, Now I am Full confident Brahmos Aerospace may develop Light weight material for Kaveri-2 which is going to develop with 90 kN

If govt puts Good Funds in metallurgy RnD with strict timelines and Massive input of Human Resources from IITs NITs IISC etc , we can create High quality metal for our submarines , Jets etc.
Even single crystal Blade tech can be conquered. we need Funds, Human resource and Patience

FYI, metal used for Indian aircraft careers and submarines have been developed and produced in India.
DMR1700 is the name of the steel used in INS Vikranth.

Congratulations SAF and AWEIL, way to go !!!

Perhaps it helps all small arms industries in India to develop and produce indigenous handguns, assault rifles, and heavy caliber rifles for Indian armed forces and also for exports.
They will sell like hot cakes in many third world countries for sure.
