Army to procure 550 indigenous ASMI 9×19mm SMG from Lokesh Machines Ltd

In a major stride towards self-reliance, the Indian Army has placed an order for 550 domestically-developed ASMI 9x19mm submachine guns (SMGs). The contract, awarded to Lokesh Machine Ltd (LKM) at a cost of ₹4.6 crore, marks a significant milestone in India's push for indigenous defense manufacturing.

The ASMI is a cutting-edge submachine gun designed specifically for use with the 9x19mm Parabellum cartridge, a widely-used caliber within the Indian Army and other national security forces. This ammunition is renowned for its affordability and accessibility, making it a practical choice for both handguns and SMGs.

This groundbreaking procurement underscores the Indian Army's commitment to equipping its soldiers with state-of-the-art, locally-produced weaponry. The ASMI's indigenous development signals promising advancements in India's defense manufacturing capabilities.

The foldable handle needs to be redesigned based on other carbines and new designs like the JVPC

This is a good start, but it's still a very small amount.
OFB can't even make half decent firearms for decades, while an IA officer with help of a private firm managed to do so in such a small amount of time.Altough is this a truly clean slate design or based on some foreign one that has been rebadged for India?

IA is placing equal orders for screwdrivered Taurus carbine from Jindal. When will they improve?

Hope it performs well and is successfully inducted with future in mind

Next news: The Indian Army places a new order for 200000 SMGs, with a foreign vendor, in an emergency procurement, keeping in mind the rising tensions with China. The foreign vendor will also setup a factory in India to manufacture the SMGs under the 'Atmanirbhar Bharat' initiative. The military's top brass expressed hope that soon more Indian companies will come out with indigenously designed SMGs. 😉😉

This is a very low order and it could be to just test it out. The army need a carbine as all of ours are decades old and the military have dragged their feet by passing the JVPC gun which meets all of their requirements and its powerful to pierce even body armour using the MINSAS round.

Now they have designed the ASMI gun and they are still carrying out many tests which will take time as it has to pass through different terrain and weather conditions before they pass it so it will take at least 2 years before they complete the tests or even longer if there is any problem with the guns. The only benefit to this gun is that it uses the same round on all of our current carbine guns.

What about JVPC?

In comparison to JVPC, ASMI seems more ergonomical & with a readily available ammunition of 9X19mm.

I hope that IA will consider to replace it's Ageing Browning-Hi Power Pistols with Glock-17 from CMT Pvt Ltd under Make in Indian-program.
