Contrary to recent social media rumors, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) has confirmed that its CATS Warrior Unmanned Combat Aerial Vehicle (UCAV) has not yet taken flight. The 1.1-ton Loyal Wingman prototype is still under construction, with its maiden flight anticipated in late 2025.

The Combat Air Teaming System (CATS) Warrior is an ambitious HAL project to develop an advanced Loyal Wingman UCAV designed to operate alongside manned fighter jets like the Tejas and AMCA. After successful testing of a 300-kilogram scaled-down model, fabrication of the full-scale prototype was approved earlier this year.

HAL is currently focused on building the prototype, a process that involves precision engineering and extensive quality assurance to ensure the final product meets operational and safety standards. The prototype is expected to be rolled out by mid-2025, with flight trials commencing thereafter.

CATS Warrior: Expanding the IAF's Capabilities

The CATS Warrior is envisioned as a force multiplier for the Indian Air Force (IAF), capable of undertaking high-risk missions such as surveillance, reconnaissance, and even combat, while minimizing risks to manned aircraft and pilots. Key features of the UCAV include:
  • Loyal Wingman Design: Operates in tandem with manned fighter jets, controlled by advanced algorithms or direct pilot input.
  • Payload Capacity: Can carry a variety of sensors, weapons, and mission-specific equipment.
  • Stealth and Survivability: Features a low-observable design with high endurance for penetrating contested airspace.
  • Modular Capabilities: Adaptable to diverse mission requirements, enhancing versatility in modern combat scenarios.
The development of the CATS Warrior represents a significant advancement in India's indigenous unmanned combat aircraft capabilities. While the recent rumors of its maiden flight are premature, the project is progressing steadily towards its anticipated first flight in late 2025.

This advanced UCAV holds the potential to significantly enhance the IAF's operational capabilities and contribute to India's growing self-reliance in defence technology.

This is a crucial drone and another way to increase our fire power at a very low cost compared to a jet. We should support the program as much as possible and the private sector can help a lot in developing the engine, technology or software etc.
