The 27th Bengaluru Tech Summit provided a stage for the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) to showcase India's latest advancements in defence aviation technology.

DRDO scientists, Satish Kumar and Pragya, detailed three groundbreaking projects: Intelligence, Surveillance, Target Acquisition, and Reconnaissance (ISTAR) systems, Multi-Mode Maritime Aircraft (MMMA), and Airborne Early Warning and Control (AEW&C) platforms.

ISTAR: A Game-Changer in Battlefield Intelligence

Dr. Satish Kumar emphasized the strategic importance of ISTAR platforms in modern warfare, stating that these systems will "revolutionize the way we gather and analyze battlefield intelligence." The ISTAR initiative aims to provide the Indian Air Force (IAF) with real-time intelligence, enhancing its ability to monitor and respond to threats effectively.

DRDO is currently finalizing a global tendering process to select aircraft platforms for the ISTAR systems, with the Bombardier Global 6000 and Gulfstream G550 as leading contenders. These platforms, equipped with advanced sensors and communication systems, will complement existing UAVs and bolster India's network-centric warfare capabilities.

MMMA: Securing India's Maritime Borders

Pragya highlighted the Multi-Mode Maritime Aircraft project, designed to strengthen India's maritime security. "We're integrating advanced sensors like AESA radars onto C295 platforms to create two variants: MMMA for the Indian Coast Guard and MRMR for the Navy," she explained.

These aircraft will be equipped for air-to-sea surveillance, enabling precise tracking of maritime threats. DRDO is actively seeking development and production partners to ensure timely delivery and deployment of these critical assets.

AEW&C: Enhancing Airborne Early Warning Systems

The scientists also discussed the ongoing transformation of six A321 aircraft into next-generation AEW&C platforms, expected to be operational by 2027-28. "With advanced gallium nitride-based radar modules and 300-degree coverage, these platforms will set new standards in situational awareness," Kumar stated.

These upgraded AEW&C systems will significantly enhance the IAF's fleet, with plans to integrate similar features into existing Netra Mark-1A aircraft, further strengthening India's aerial defence network.

A Step Towards Indigenous Excellence

These projects underscore DRDO's commitment to self-reliance in defence technology. By developing and deploying these advanced systems, India is poised to achieve new milestones in its defence aviation capabilities. The Bengaluru Tech Summit served as an important platform to showcase these advancements, reinforcing Karnataka's role as a hub for innovation and technology.
