HAL Chief Visits Russia to Explore Engine Production for Su-30MKI and Other IAF Aircraft

In a move aimed at boosting India's self-reliance in defence production, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) Dr. D. K. Sunil is currently in Russia to explore the possibility of serial production of aircraft engines for the Su-30MKI and other Russian-origin platforms operated by the Indian Air Force (IAF).

This visit underscores India's ongoing efforts to deepen its defence industrial ties with Russia. HAL has a long-standing relationship with Russian defence manufacturers, having licensed and produced several Russian-origin platforms, including the Su-30MKI fighter jets. These latest discussions aim to address India's growing need for engine production capabilities, reducing its reliance on imports and ensuring the operational availability of its aircraft fleet.

India operates one of the largest fleets of Su-30MKIs globally, with over 270 aircraft in service. The fleet's AL-31FP engines, currently manufactured by Russia's United Engine Corporation (UEC), are critical to maintaining the aircraft's combat readiness. Establishing a robust, indigenous engine production and maintenance ecosystem has become a priority for India.

By exploring serial production of these engines in India, HAL aims to:

• Reduce dependence on imports: Secure a reliable supply of engines for its Su-30MKI fleet and potentially other Russian-origin aircraft.
• Enhance self-reliance: Boost India's domestic defence industry and contribute to the "Make in India" initiative.
• Improve operational availability: Ensure timely maintenance and overhaul of engines, maximizing the IAF's operational readiness.
• Gain technological expertise: Acquire valuable knowledge and expertise in aircraft engine manufacturing.

This visit reaffirms the strong bilateral defence ties between India and Russia. It highlights India's intent to leverage Russia's expertise to enhance its indigenous capabilities and achieve greater self-reliance in defence production. As India continues to modernize its armed forces, securing a reliable and sustainable supply of critical components like aircraft engines is a key priority.
