India Explores Small Modular Reactors to Power Andaman and Nicobar Islands Amid Mega Strategic Push Near Malacca Strait


In a decisive move to strengthen India's strategic and economic footprint in the Indian Ocean Region, the government is exploring the deployment of nuclear-powered Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

Scientists from the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) are actively conducting on-ground assessments across the archipelago to evaluate potential sites for these advanced power facilities.

Powering a Mega-Infrastructure Push​

The push for nuclear energy is directly linked to India's ambitious Great Nicobar Development Project.

This sprawling initiative includes the construction of a 14.2 million TEU International Container Transhipment Terminal at Galathea Bay, a greenfield international airport, large-scale defence facilities, and a modern township.

Currently, the Andaman and Nicobar Islands rely heavily on diesel generator sets for electricity—a costly and logistically challenging method that requires fuel to be shipped from the mainland.

This existing setup cannot sustain the massive, uninterrupted energy demands of the upcoming infrastructure.

To bridge this gap, SMRs are being viewed as the ideal solution.

Unlike traditional, sprawling nuclear plants, SMRs—such as India's domestically designed 220 MW Bharat Small Reactor (BSR)—feature a compact footprint, modular factory-built construction, and advanced passive safety mechanisms.

This makes them perfectly suited for remote and geographically constrained island environments.

Between September 4 and 8, 2026, a specialized BARC team under the Department of Atomic Energy evaluated potential locations across the Union Territory's three districts.

The scientific delegation also briefed Lieutenant Governor Admiral D.K. Joshi on the technical feasibility, prospective sites, and safety parameters of the proposed reactor plan.

Guarding the Malacca Chokepoint​

Beyond commercial development, the nuclear power discussion carries profound geopolitical weight.

The Andaman and Nicobar Islands sit at a highly strategic maritime crossroads, overlooking the Six Degree Channel and the Strait of Malacca. This strait serves as one of the world's most critical shipping lanes, connecting the Indian Ocean to the South China Sea.

Securing a reliable, high-capacity power grid is essential for the expanding military presence on the islands. The archipelago is home to the Andaman and Nicobar Command, India’s only integrated tri-services military command.

Furthermore, Great Nicobar Island hosts INS Baaz at Campbell Bay, the country's southernmost naval air station which actively monitors the regional sea lanes.

As foreign naval activities continue to rise in the Indian Ocean, New Delhi is actively working to transform the islands into a formidable maritime stronghold.

A continuous and independent nuclear power supply would significantly upgrade the operational readiness, surveillance capabilities, and logistical stamina of the Indian Armed Forces stationed in the region.

While the current BARC site inspections represent only the initial technical phase rather than an immediate construction announcement, the move signals a clear long-term strategy.

By integrating next-generation civilian nuclear technology with massive infrastructure and defence upgrades, India is laying the groundwork for a secure, self-reliant, and dominant presence in the eastern Indian Ocean.
