Amidst rising tensions and increased military activity in the Asia-Pacific region, India is significantly bolstering its naval capabilities with a planned investment of $31.6 billion in submarine procurement over the next decade, according to a new report by GlobalData. This move comes as other regional powers like China, South Korea, and Australia are also enhancing their underwater fleets.

A key element of this investment is the Project 75-Alpha, a program focused on the indigenous construction of six nuclear attack submarines (SSNs). Recently approved by India's Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS), Project 75-Alpha is deemed crucial for upgrading the Indian Navy's anti-submarine warfare (ASW) capabilities within the Indian Ocean Region (IOR).

GlobalData's report, "Global Submarine Market Analysis and Forecast to 2033," highlights that nearly a third (30.5%) of India's planned submarine expenditure, approximately $17 billion, will be dedicated to these advanced SSNs. The Project 75-Alpha submarines are expected to displace 6,000 tonnes and are being developed through a collaborative effort between the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), the Department of Atomic Energy, and the Indian Navy.

This substantial investment in submarine technology underscores India's commitment to maintaining a strong naval presence and ensuring regional security in the face of growing geopolitical challenges. The indigenously built Project 75-Alpha submarines are expected to play a pivotal role in enhancing India's underwater dominance and strategic deterrence in the coming years.

SSN is very important after the completion of the SSBN programme to deter china & pakistan from any misadventure in the IOR & beyond.

Bharat Needs SSN so what how much is spend , by the time Economy is going to also grow , Bharat may climbe to 3rd position from current so more spending will b done in uture too more SSN addition expected too Once get Building & design knowledge plus critical components/Tech are developed Indigenously

CCS has sanctioned Rs 45,000 crores (USD 5.35 Billion ie about 17.25%) for 2 SSNs to be built at Ship Building Centre of Vizag.

Visakhapatnam. Only the Ship Building Centre (SBC) in Visakhapatnam is certified to build nuclear submarines in India.
Can the SBC build the SSNs and S5s simultaneously?

We should focus on specialized yards both from a capability and also capacity standpoint, instead of spreading them thin if we can! Key criteria should take into account - Future demand, critical investments in dry docks, metallurgy, weapon integration, testing, worker skills, latest machines, proximity to major naval bases, scientific & engineering talent etc., capability for maintenance, repair, major upgrades & enhancements, should determine how we move plan, invest and move forward…

Should - MDL be for destroyers, and SSKs, while CSL for IAC and LPDs/LHDs, SBC for nuclear subs -S5s and Project Alpha SSNs, while frigates, corvettes and smaller vessels can be spread across…

Also as L&T builds capability & capacity it could be the 2nd location for destroyers, frigates and SSKs…

Thoughts?

It's a reasonable sum and India can easily afford to spend this amount over a 5 year period. By that time, defence exports should help bring in good profits.
