India to Deploy 6,000km Range Russian Voronezh Radar at DRDO Campus in Karnataka to Monitor China-Pak Stealth Aerial Threats

In a move to bolster its defence capabilities and counter regional security threats, India is set to commission a Russian-manufactured Voronezh radar system at the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) campus in Challakere, Karnataka.

This powerful over-the-horizon radar, with its impressive 6,000 km range, represents a significant upgrade to India's strategic defence infrastructure.

Challakere, once known primarily as India's "Edible Oil City," has transformed into a thriving hub for science and technology. Located approximately three hours from Bengaluru, it houses key establishments like ISRO, DRDO, the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), and the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC).

This concentration of scientific talent and infrastructure has made Challakere a focal point for advanced research and development in defence and space technology.

The Voronezh radar system is a strategic asset capable of scanning the entirety of Pakistan and deep into Chinese territory, despite being located nearly 1,800 km from India's borders with these neighbours.

Its long-range capabilities enable early detection of ballistic missiles, stealth aircraft, and various other aerial threats, providing India with a crucial advantage in monitoring and responding to potential security challenges.

Operating across various wavebands, the Voronezh radar is versatile and capable of tracking hundreds of targets simultaneously. This provides real-time surveillance over vast areas, significantly enhancing India's missile warning and air defence systems. The installation at Challakere is expected to integrate with India's broader network of radars and sensors, creating a comprehensive air defence shield.

Beyond its military advantages, the project has substantial economic implications. India's agreement with Russia includes significant local manufacturing components, with over 50 Indian enterprises, including startups, participating in producing at least 60% of the radar system. This collaboration aligns with India's "Make in India" initiative, fostering job creation and boosting local defence manufacturing capabilities.

The deployment of the Voronezh radar in southern India sends a clear message about India's commitment to safeguarding its security interests. It also signifies the deepening defence cooperation between India and Russia, even amidst the complexities of international sanctions and geopolitical tensions.

This move is likely to be perceived as a strategic countermeasure by India against the growing missile capabilities of its neighbours, ensuring that India maintains a vigilant and proactive defence posture.

Chances of the F-35 are blurred. By the way, it may appear in Aero India 2025, but after the S-400 & Voronezh, it will disappear.

While Soviets were the king of the game (woodpecker). India has been pretty late to the Over the Horizon Radar system.
Even Iran has been working on its own OTH Radar with tange in excess of 3000 KMs.

Why was it installed on the DRDO campus? Installing it at an air force or military base would make more sense, wouldn't it? Is it going to be operated by scientists or defence personnel?
wonder how much this beast costs...

Is this real? A big azz Voronezh radar will be visible from miles away on the ground and also on sat images. Till now we have not seen any pictures.

The decison to install it in southern part of india is good so that during war or premptive strike it doesn't get destroyed easily as its size is huge installing near borders would make it very favourable target of enemies anti radiation missiles

One for chinese and one for pakis required. So in total one more required. May be one more in central India would be good.

Maybe they will build a radar dome over it, or have missile defense top protect it.

Is there actual clear proof this happened? Till now I thought the rumour mills were going back and forth on if a deal was even signed or not, but now it's installed?

Granted in the current environment, I can understand keeping such deals low visibility. Until Rubio's India-US co-operation act is signed and gives us a more permanent CAATSA waiver at least. I could hope there's also some sneaky stuff going on with rebooting our Sukhoi production lines to get ready for a Su-57M deal...

Like it says, this would be 1800km from either border, hard to get to with anything but high visibility missiles that are susceptible to several layers of our air defence before it, and you're not going to hit a radar with an ICBM

They paid $4bln for this, so there must be many.
I think there might be some mistranslations going on, since 4 billion happens to be its price in Rubles

Somewhere in the mix is an Indian calling everything "bucks" lol

Could be, there were also talks about manufacturing these locally under license, so $4Bln seem kind of accurate.

Considering the 100x difference between a Ruble and a US dollar, that would be an alarming spread lol

Some drones have that kind of range and so necessary to protect it second China has stealth planes.

We need three more such radars. One in odisha, one in Madhya Pradesh, one in north east

Also we need another 4 such dummy fake radars to confuse the enemy, one in north east, one in utter pradesh, one in Haryana and another one in Maharashtra.

in total, we need atleast 10 such radars, both genuine and fake all over India.

Why does it matter. For the foreseeable future atleast its going to be research project. Its got 6000Km horizontal range. They located it strategically in the hinterlands. My guess is they are going to collect intel on all the flying objects for the next few years and build a database. Like correlate signature with sat maps and ground intel in order to identify the different aircrafts.

Installing this Radar is great decision because DRDO,ISRO,IISC ,Stock exchange like installations are prime targets because they are brains of Space and defence program and economic heartbeats .Instalaltion of Radar in south will monitor Indian ocean areas Lakshdweep, and Andaman and beung able to monitor 6000km area will also be helpfull to monitor northern borders also its size is large so it will be easy target if kept in north atleast in southern sea our enmies donot have any missile launch station and Navy is well strong in Indian ocean.

Why? Radar's got 6000km range. We just need to install it far away from front lines. MP ok.

This thing is claimed to have 6000Km range. So it would cover almost all of China, Korean peninsula, Indonesia, South Africa, Greece, parts of Australia. If we put them in Andaman & Lakshadweep can get some more areas covered. From A&N can cover Guam. From gujarat can cover parts of France.
