ISFAHAN, Iran – Iranian authorities confirmed that several drones were intercepted and destroyed over the central city of Isfahan late Thursday night. State media reports that after the interception, air defense systems were activated in response to the incident. This development comes after recent cross-border attacks between Iran and Israel, heightening tensions in the region.
While sources indicate Israel carried out the drone activity, the U.S. was reportedly not involved. A senior Iranian official, speaking on condition of anonymity, stated there are no current plans for immediate retaliation and no clarity about who was responsible for the drone operation.
Initial reports from Iran's Fars news agency described explosions near an army base in Isfahan. However, an Iranian official later clarified that there was no missile attack and the sounds were a result of air defense activity. Iran's senior commander Mihandoust echoed this, attributing the noise to air defenses targeting a "suspicious object."
Despite the incident, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has stated that Iran's nuclear facilities, including the Natanz enrichment program located in Isfahan province, remain unharmed.
An Iranian analyst speaking on state TV suggested the drone activity could be the work of internal infiltrators operating within the country.
