In a significant development for India's defense industry, Larsen & Toubro (L&T) has partnered with Advanced Weapons and Equipment India Limited (AWEIL) to compete for the Indian Army's Towed Gun System (TGS) project. The joint bid will offer the Dhanush 155x52mm towed howitzer, with L&T taking on the manufacturing role if successful.

The TGS tender, initially for 400 units with a potential expansion to 1,200 units, is a cornerstone of the Indian Army's modernization efforts. The selected howitzer will replace aging artillery systems, providing the army with a crucial firepower upgrade.

L&T and AWEIL are emphasizing the Dhanush's compliance with the Army's weight restrictions. Weighing under 15 tons, the Dhanush is designed for rapid deployment across diverse terrains, a critical requirement for the Indian Army.

However, the competition is fierce. Tata Advanced Systems and Bharat Forge have emerged as strong contenders, offering a lighter variant of the Advanced Towed Artillery Gun System (ATAGS). The ATAGS has already been cleared for production and is awaiting a separate manufacturing contract for 307 units, giving Tata and Bharat Forge a potential advantage.

While the Dhanush meets the weight requirements, it will undergo rigorous testing and evaluation to prove its performance under various operational conditions. The competition from the lighter ATAGS variant, with its proven design and production readiness, adds to the challenges faced by L&T and AWEIL.

Pvt players should come with there own Design & developments Rather than some small changes in DRDO or other DPSUs developed Gun system, they should start investing in R&D. not only for Domestic requirement but also for foreign market as there is huge potential

Masterstroke by L&T. Dhanush will overwhelm the ATAGS guns by 100%.
They are averse to risk and at the same time strives to make quick and sure profits. This mentality also shows that our Indian private sector company's engaged in defence manufacturing will not do anything new or develop anything new which can substantially up the standard of Indian weapons quality and standard.

Adani is manufacturing DRDO designed and Israeli designed weapons.

TATA is assembling American, European platforms and DRDO platforms.

L&T building Korean and DRDO and DPSUs designed weapons.

they are not doing anything new.

AWEIL should have taken a big loan from SBI and should have increased its production capacity instead of tying up with L&T. They have given their source of bread and butter, which is Dhanush to the private sector company. Very bad decision by AWEIL. It is the dumbest decision of the century.

That shows Dhanush Gun is world class developed by DPSUs , only thing lacks is production rate which pvt players do without any risk becoz they know they have secure business with good profit margin, this is risk free Business model where this pvt players throw their hat

Yes. L&T has done it calculations very well. They will win the tender 100%. No doubt about that. Because Dhanush has the same range as ATAGS and better firing rates than ATAGS and lighter by 3 tons. This Dhanush guns will have a very big export potential.

Let’s hope so. DRDO’s design has completely ruined the ATAGS. And AWEIL can’t manufacture Dhanush though the design is based on Bofors and works. So with L&T manufacturing the guns, we will have both problems sorted.

They already have significant capacity and don’t need the loan. But they simply can’t manufacture the guns. L&T can do it on time and with quality.

We should not make bidding process clumsy, a long drawn process, this ATGS is going on and on, without any substantial induction in army.
India needs to find ways to rapid induction of weapon platforms, it shouldn't drag on for decades.
Our procurement process needs total overhauling.
