Larsen & Toubro (L&T) has clarified that the Zorawar light tank, currently under development in collaboration with the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), will not be based on the chassis or hull of the K9 Vajra howitzer, contrary to earlier speculations.
JD Patil, Advisor to CEO and MD for L&T Defence Business and New Age Smart Technology Businesses, emphasized that the Zorawar will feature a completely new design, highlighting the joint effort and expertise of both L&T and DRDO in armored vehicle development.
While the tank's engine and transmission system will be imported, L&T reaffirms the commitment to indigenously manufacture the majority of the tank's equipment, aligning with the national drive for self-reliance in defence production.
The Zorawar light tank, specifically designed for agility and mobility in challenging terrains, is poised to significantly bolster the Indian Army's capabilities, especially in mountainous regions.
