Guwahati: The Manipur state assembly was alerted to a surge in landmine explosions along the India-Myanmar border, causing casualties and widespread fear among villagers residing in the affected areas.
Phungyar MLA Leishiyo Keishing brought the issue to light, revealing that militants from Myanmar had planted numerous landmines between border pillars 91 and 94, resulting in fatalities and injuries.
The MLA reported that two female students were tragically killed in a landmine blast on July 26, while another incident on July 16 claimed the life of a Rongmei Naga villager and injured another.
Additionally, two separate landmine explosions occurred in May, one in Namlee village and another near Z Choro village.
In response to the escalating crisis, Chief Minister N. Biren Singh announced the formation of a joint survey team comprising Assam Rifles personnel, Manipur Police, and intelligence officials.
The team will be tasked with identifying, removing, and defusing the landmines. The findings of the joint team will be communicated to the Prime Minister and Minister of External Affairs to facilitate coordinated efforts with Myanmar authorities.
The situation highlights the urgent need for cross-border cooperation to address the landmine issue and ensure the safety and security of the local population.
