Mazagon Dock Makes Waves with Launch of Mumbai's First Electric Boats

Mumbai is about to get a whole lot greener with the launch of its first-ever electric boats. Commissioned on Tuesday by Union Defence Secretary Giridhar Aramane at Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited's (MDL) 250th-anniversary celebration, these boats will ferry passengers between Navi Mumbai, Mumbai, Elephanta Caves, and Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA).

This is not just a win for commuters but a giant leap for sustainability. The electric boats, co-developed with local tech partners, run at one-tenth the cost of diesel boats with far less maintenance. Imagine, a boat ride that's easy on the wallet and the environment!

But wait, there's more! A solar-electric hybrid boat with a top speed of 11 knots was also commissioned, along with a 24-passenger fuel cell electric ferry named "SUCHI." MDL spokesperson stated, "Its advanced technology has zero emissions and low acoustic signatures, leading to cleaner waterways and contributing to environmental conservation." So, while you're enjoying your ride, you're also helping preserve Mumbai's waterways.

A Collaboration for Cleaner Waterways

Sohel Kazani, of Bharat Freight Group, the boat operator, shared that MDL has been instrumental in guiding the development of these fully electric and luxury passenger boats. While final delivery is expected by the end of May, operations are set to begin in June, pending approval from the Maharashtra Maritime Board.

250 Years of Shipbuilding Excellence

MDL's 250th anniversary was a grand affair. It included the launch of a prototype indigenous midget submarine named 'Arowana', the release of a commemorative coin, and a daylong technical seminar.

Chief guest Giridhar Aramane lauded MDL as a "precious jewel in the crown of India," highlighting its contributions to naval and commercial shipbuilding. Indeed, MDL has a rich history, dating back to 1774 when a small dry dock was built in Mazgaon to service ships of the British East India Company. Since then, it has evolved into a leading warship builder, producing world-class vessels for the Indian Navy.

This launch marks a new chapter in Mumbai's maritime history, showcasing a commitment to innovation and sustainability. So, whether you're a daily commuter or a tourist, get ready for a smoother, cleaner, and greener ride on Mumbai's waterways.
