The Indian Air Force (IAF) is set to conduct the first formal test flight and landing on the newly paved runway at its upcoming Nyoma airbase in Eastern Ladakh this month. This marks a significant step towards operationalizing the base, which is strategically located near the Line of Actual Control (LAC) with China.

Initial flight trials were conducted during the summer, and now the supporting infrastructure, including landing aids and runway shoulders, is nearing completion. Sources indicate that the base could be formally inaugurated in the coming weeks.

The foundation for the Nyoma airbase project was laid in September 2023 by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh. The Rs 214-crore project involved converting a mud-paved runway into a fully-paved one capable of supporting fighter jet operations. Once fully operational, the base will have the capacity to launch and recover aircraft, and conduct minor maintenance.

Strategic Significance

Located 180 km southeast of Leh and just 30 km from the LAC, Nyoma will be the IAF's fourth operational base in Ladakh. This development is significant in light of the rapid infrastructure development by China across the LAC. Nyoma's strategic location and its ability to accommodate various aircraft types will significantly enhance the IAF's operational capabilities in the region.

The airbase is situated on a natural flat area spanning 1,235 acres at an altitude of 13,700 feet. Previously, it was used for helicopter and special operations aircraft like the C-130J, which can land on mud-paved runways. The runway's alignment allows for aircraft to land and take off from both directions, increasing operational flexibility.

Enhanced Operational Capabilities

The Nyoma airbase will significantly enhance the IAF's ability to respond to potential threats along the LAC. Following the 2020 military standoff with China and the Galwan clash, the IAF undertook a massive airlift operation, transporting troops, tanks, and equipment to the region. The Nyoma base will further strengthen the IAF's ability to rapidly deploy and support its forces in the area.

With the completion of the Nyoma airbase, the IAF will have four operational bases in Ladakh, including Leh, Kargil, and Thoise. This expanded infrastructure will significantly enhance India's air power projection capabilities in the strategically important Ladakh region.
