The American public is significantly divided and largely skeptical regarding President Donald Trump’s latest military offensive in Iran, Operation Epic Fury.
Recent polling indicates that a majority of Americans disapprove of the strikes, with opposition intensifying following the deaths of six U.S. soldiers in the conflict. Further, Protests have broken out across the country, including major rallies outside the White House, where demonstrators have chanted anti-war slogans and voiced opposition to U.S.-Israeli strikes which could be tricky going forward given that mid-terms are just around.
Support for the war is currently low, with multiple polls showing that only about a quarter of the population favors the military action. A Reuters/Ipsos poll found that only 27% of Americans support the strikes, while 43% disapprove while a CNN/SSRS poll reported that 59% of Americans disapprove of the decision to strike Iran.
However, politically, the opinion is sharply split by party lines. Approximately 80% of Democrats disapprove of the strikes, whereas 55% of Republicans support the strikes. However, even among Republicans, 42% said they would likely withdraw support if the conflict leads to more U.S. casualties.
Key Public Concerns and Protests:
1. Fear of "Forever Wars": Many Americans, including segments of Trump's MAGA base, are wary of another long-term Middle Eastern conflict.
2. Casualties: The confirmation of six U.S. soldier deaths has increased public anxiety.
3. Ground Invasion Fears: There is significant concern among the public and lawmakers that the current air and naval campaign could escalate into a ground operation.
In response to public and legislative pressure, the U.S. Senate also recently voted on a bipartisan resolution to curb Trump's war powers. However, Senate Republicans effectively blocked the measure.
Trump, however, has dismissed the negative polling, claiming his actions are a "righteous mission" and suggesting a "silent majority" actually supports the effort to prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons...
