Russia Unveils Fifth-Generation Jet Engines at Airshow China, Eyes Potential Indian Market

Russia's United Engine Corporation (UEC), a subsidiary of Rostec, is making a significant debut at Airshow China by showcasing its latest fifth-generation engine for operational-tactical aviation to the international community.

This marks the first time the engine has been publicly displayed outside of Russia. Alongside this cutting-edge technology, UEC is also presenting an upgraded line of its widely recognized AL-31F/FN engine family and the new SM-100 engine.

The AL-31F/FN engine family has powered a variety of fighter jets and remains a crucial part of UEC's portfolio. Notably, the AL-31FN variant, originally developed for the Chengdu J-10, boasts increased thrust capabilities reaching 12.7 tonnes-force. This variant features a redesigned gearbox configuration, optimized for the J-10 platform. Further upgrades to the AL-31FN series, such as the Series 3 variant, have elevated its thrust output to an impressive 13.7 tonnes-force.

India's Su-30MKI, a key multirole fighter in the IAF fleet, utilizes the AL-31FP variant, produced both in Russia and in India under a technology transfer agreement with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL). While maintaining the 12.5 tonnes-force thrust of the base AL-31F, the AL-31FP incorporates thrust vectoring technology, enabling nozzle deflection up to ±15° at a rate of 30°/sec. This capability significantly enhances the Su-30MKI's maneuverability and combat agility.

UEC's unveiling of its fifth-generation engine and updated engine lineup comes at a time when India is actively seeking advanced propulsion systems for its indigenous aircraft programs. The IAF's focus on developing supersonic trainers and combat aircraft, such as the HLFT-42, creates a potential opportunity for UEC. The HLFT-42, a supersonic trainer under consideration, would require high-performance engines with features like thrust vectoring and improved fuel efficiency. UEC's fifth-generation engine could potentially serve as a benchmark or even a contender for this program.
 
india should consider it for super Sukhoi program as structural changes wouldn't be required and with enhanced thrust upto 137 kn will improve trust to weight ratio and also improve availablity rate of these jets too.

Just remember the fiasco of AL-55I for IJT trainer.

Use Dry Kaveri and whatever afterburner India can make.

AL-41F-1C may be the best option as it fixed all the issues of AL-31FP and also a clean new generation of technology, but alas India is sticking to its old but marginally upgraded and spruced up AL-31FP only, and that at very costlier amount than even GE F-414INS6 engine.

So no chance as IAF and MoD want to stick with what is working and being manufactured in India.

Agreed. A small correction, however: The Sitara's engine was the AL-55, which is a small turbofan managing around 17.5 kN. The AL-51 is the new engine for the Su-57, which generates around 150 kN.
 
India has already made a deal for new jet engines for the Sukhoi jets.

For the HLFT the engine is too powerful. It’s ideal to use the F404 variant or the indigenous Kaveri or a better version of it.
 
We should start a brand new engine program. Involving IITs and Private Industries under the Direct Overwatch of PMO or MOD. Periodic updates should be given to PM or Defence Minister. Key Technology development should have direct intervention of PM or Ministry of Defence or Ministry of Education or Higher education.
