Russia has announced the development of a new-generation engine designed to replace the existing AL-31 and AL-41 engines currently powering its Su-30 and Su-35 fighter jets. This advancement offers significant improvements in performance and durability, potentially impacting the global fighter jet landscape, including India's Su-30MKI fleet.

The new engine boasts a redesigned architecture featuring wide-chord fan blades, contributing to reduced weight and increased structural strength. This innovation enhances aerodynamic efficiency, particularly during high-stress flight maneuvers. Rigorous testing at the Central Institute of Aviation Motors (TsIAM) has confirmed the engine's superior frontal performance, exceeding international benchmarks and setting new standards for efficiency in its class.

Production is well underway, with design documentation finalized and preparations for mass production in progress. Notably, over 70% of the engine's components are adapted from existing production lines, ensuring cost-effective scalability. Four prototypes have already been built and tested, validating the engine's technical specifications and confirming its adherence to global standards.

The engine's compatibility with both AL-31 and AL-41 powered aircraft makes it a compelling option for operators worldwide, particularly for those seeking long-term replacements for aging engines. With a projected production capacity exceeding 1,500 units, the engine is poised to address a global demand for enhanced fighter jet propulsion.

India, operating one of the world's largest Su-30MKI fleets, is a key potential market for this new engine. The Indian Air Force (IAF) and Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) are currently exploring options to upgrade their Su-30MKI fleet, aiming to extend service life and enhance capabilities. Integrating this advanced Russian engine could significantly modernize the IAF's fighter jet arsenal.

Key attributes of the new engine include

  • Increased Durability and Operating Life: A designated resource of 6,000 flight hours represents a significant improvement over previous models, promising reduced maintenance and operational costs.
  • Improved Resistance to Environmental Hazards: Enhanced resilience to bird strikes and harsh environmental conditions extends operational range and reliability across diverse terrains and climates.
  • Enhanced High-Speed Performance: Increased permissible operating time at high speeds (M+) enables greater endurance during high-speed maneuvers and supersonic flight.
  • No Modifications Required for Airframe Compatibility: "Plug-and-play" compatibility with existing AL-31 and AL-41 airframes eliminates the need for aircraft modifications, minimizing downtime and integration costs.
  • Fan and Full Authority Digital Engine Control (FADEC): FADEC optimizes performance, fuel efficiency, and engine control, enhancing both operational effectiveness and pilot safety.
This development comes as India actively seeks to enhance its Su-30MKI fleet. The IAF has previously expressed interest in upgrading its existing fleet, potentially through partnerships for local upgrades. The integration of this new engine could offer extended service life, improved combat performance, and greater operational efficiency, aligning with the IAF's modernization goals.

Hundreds Time I have said IAF should consider enhance version of Engine for Super Sukhoi rather than AL-31, In future Super sukhoi will have heavy weapon package, even yesterday i have commented IAF should consider derivative of AL-51, Russia have develop derivatives of AL-51 which produces 137 kN Thrust which will b ideal for Super Sukhoi upgrade second additional 72 offer of AL should b also b considered by IAF based on AL-51 Derivative Engine by the Time MRFA process fruitify

Perhaps this is what India was waiting for, skipping the stopgap AL41 upgrade for the Super Sukhoi. The AL31s have to be replaced every 2000 hours and overhauled every 1000, so moving to 6000 hour lifespans quickly becomes worth it as it doesn't cost remotely 3x what an AL31 does.

India's super sukhoi program to upgrade Su30 aircraft should also includ advan Al31 Engine that has an advanced FADEC control system and an engine life 6000 hours.
Without upgradation to high performance engine super sukhoi program is meaningless.

Bro, these are Russian claims. Similar claims of over 4000 hours between replacement and as made for AL31. So let them prove their numbers first.

This new engine will obviously perform better than the engines we currently use which is over 25 years old. Since that time there has been a lot of advances in engine, metallurgy, technology, science and engineering which is why it’s better than what we use. The only problem is that it’s expensive, we won’t get any critical technology transferred to us or manufacture a large amount of the components with indigenous content indigenously.

A deal has anyway been made to buy the improved version of the AL 31 with FADEC which will improve its performance and maintenance. Also we have already developed an entire ecosystem in manufacturing that particular engine which makes it easier for companies to produce those parts. At the same time HAL and its suppliers should look at ways to increase the amount of thrust , lower fuel consumption, increase its lifespan and make maintenance, repairs and overhaul much easier and quicker.

I am sure, the moment we express interest in those new engine, the Russians will link it with our buying Su35/ Su57/ Su75 or even MiG 35.

Link the engines full tot with the proposed 72 more su30 by hal. Use these engines in the scaled up amca/mk2 and then bargain with west for a simila thrust engine rather than a low 110 kn engine by this we will have time and engine till something concrete happens with the west unlike the present situation where we don't have an option if they backstabs us like ge 404.

Today the mainstay of the IAF is the SU-30 MKI with around 15 squadrons and they are doing yeoman service. Strongly feel we should order another 4-5 squadrons directly imported from Russia with AESA radar and upgraded engines given the poor fleet situation which will work out very economical given Russian economic situation. Make no mistake, this is as capable as the F-15 if technically upgraded. I remember reading Russian built SU-30 MKIs have flyaway cost of $40 - 45 Mill, which is near Tejas Mk 1A costs.

They will also be delivered quickly and as a product, SU-30 is the most mature fighter Russia has.

I hope the new derivative is lighter, more power, fuel efficient and have a bit longer life span till it's next overhaul 😺
