SSS Defence Introduces T12 Tactical Shotgun Featuring a Unique Drop-In Trigger to Neutralise Low-Flying Drone Threats

Bengaluru-based arms manufacturer SSS Defence has unveiled the T12, a new 12-gauge, gas-operated semi-automatic shotgun built to meet the rigorous demands of modern combat.

Marketed as a kinetic kill solution for the modern battlefield, this magazine-fed weapon merges durability with cutting-edge engineering.

Weighing approximately 3.8 kg and accommodating 5- to 10-round magazines, the T12 distinguishes itself on the global stage with a specialised "drop-in" trigger assembly—a highly unusual and innovative feature for a military-grade shotgun.

Rugged Construction and Ergonomics

Built to withstand extreme battlefield conditions, the firearm comes equipped with a 20-inch (508 mm) nitrided barrel that provides exceptional resistance to wear and corrosion.

Both the upper and lower receivers are crafted from high-strength 7075-T6 aluminium, ensuring the weapon remains relatively lightweight without sacrificing structural integrity.

To accommodate diverse user preferences and tactical situations, the T12 features completely ambidextrous handling alongside a versatile, adjustable buttstock complete with a built-in cheek rest.

Key Technical Specifications:

  • Calibre: 12 Gauge
  • Mechanism: Gas-operated semi-automatic
  • Weight: ~3.8 kg
  • Barrel Length: 20 inches (508 mm)
  • Capacity: 5 to 10 round magazines
  • Effective Range: 80+ metres

Dual-Purpose Anti-Drone Capabilities

While it functions effectively as a traditional tactical shotgun for close-quarters engagements, breaching operations, and guarding perimeters, the T12 is explicitly designed as a "drone slayer."

Using specialised ammunition, the shotgun is capable of effectively neutralising low-flying unmanned aerial systems (UAS) at extended ranges.

Recent field demonstrations conducted by SSS Defence showcased the weapon successfully taking down a drone target at a distance of 90 metres.

Furthermore, the weapon system can seamlessly complement broader acoustic detection networks, such as the company's VARAHA sensor system, to form a comprehensive anti-drone shield.

Streamlined Logistics and Future Development

From a logistical standpoint, the T12 was developed to seamlessly integrate into existing military arsenals.

It shares a significant number of components with other firearms produced by SSS Defence.

This deliberate design choice streamlines supply chains and maintenance procedures, meaning that military or law enforcement units already equipped with the company's assault rifles or sniper systems can adopt the new shotgun with minimal need for extra training or entirely new inventories of spare parts.

The company is not stopping at the base model; further iterations of the T12 are already in the works.

Upcoming versions are expected to feature built-in suppressors, which will cater to special operations forces requiring low-profile equipment for stealth missions and reduced firing signatures.

Impact on the Defence Industry

Ultimately, the T12 represents a major leap forward for India's domestic arms manufacturing capabilities.

As the dangers posed by weaponised commercial drones and loitering munitions rapidly expand globally, SSS Defence executives have noted that ground troops need reliable, immediate options rather than waiting for complex electronic countermeasures.

By delivering a fully indigenous, highly ergonomic, and capable weapon system, SSS Defence is firmly establishing itself as a competitive force in the international small arms sector, deeply aligned with national self-reliance initiatives in the defence sector.
