Tejas Mk2 Prototype Reaches 70% Assembly as Pre-Flight Calibration Begins, Rollout Targeted for Late March or April

The development of India’s next-generation fighter, the Tejas Mk2, has reached a transformative stage.

Recent reports indicate that the first prototype is approximately 70% complete, allowing the programme to transition into the critical pre-flight calibration phase.

A formal rollout of the aircraft is now anticipated to take place between late March and April 2026.

Technical Milestones and Assembly Progress

The current calibration phase is a rigorous technical requirement designed to validate the aircraft's core systems before it ever leaves the ground.

Engineers at Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) are currently focused on:
  • Flight Control Laws: Testing the digital "brain" of the jet to ensure stable handling.
  • Structural Integrity: Conducting stress assessments to verify the airframe's durability.
  • Fuel System Verification: Exhaustive checks to ensure leak-proof and efficient fuel delivery.
While the integration of major components—including the forward fuselage, centre fuselage, and wings—has been successfully completed in Bengaluru, the project did encounter minor setbacks.

These were primarily attributed to the delayed delivery of specific parts from private sector partners, though the assembly has now regained its momentum.

The Path to Maiden Flight

Following the official rollout this spring, the prototype will move immediately into high-speed taxi trials. these tests are vital for evaluating the aircraft's braking systems, steering, and stability while moving at high velocities on the runway.

If these ground evaluations proceed without the need for significant modifications, the Tejas Mk2 is projected to take its first flight approximately six to eight months after the rollout.

Current estimates from the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) suggest a maiden flight window between June and July 2026, though some manufacturing projections extend into early 2027.

A Medium-Weight Leap

The Tejas Mk2, often referred to as the Medium Weight Fighter (MWF), represents a significant evolution over the existing Tejas Mk1A.

Unlike its predecessor, the Mk2 is designed to replace ageing legacy fleets such as the Jaguar, Mirage 2000, and MiG-29.

The aircraft will be powered by the more robust General Electric F414-INS6 engine.

To further bolster India's defence self-reliance, the jet will also feature the indigenous Uttam AESA Radar and an advanced Electronic Warfare (EW) suite, making it a formidable 4.5-generation multi-role platform.

Rollout in March 2026. Bullshit.

The 1A is 6 months minimum from completion of weapon integration.

The babus have no problem lying to the people of India.

Half of HAL employees will be laid off if Tejas mk2 gets delayed

Timelines are a joke with HAL. Absolutely no accountability. Always there is some excuse. A critical national program is bogged down by such incompetence.
MoD should seriously explore the feasibility of the AMCA approach for the production phase

Bahut ahsaan hoga HAL ka agar unhone is time per kar diya to kyunki bahane Marne mein ek number hai itna let karte itna let karte Hain ki Bata nahin sakte,

HAL upgrade Tejas 1A to carry 4 ton weapon load, powered by 90KN M88 Trex engine have 900 KM combat radius and more endurance time in air, Also upgrade Tejas-II as MWF powered by 120 KN home developed engine and its internal weapon bay variant (-5th gen) !

LCA Mk2 - MCA.

My observations before accepting

The following are relevant before which aircraft should not be accepted by IAF. PMT please note.CSDO please note
1. One prototype complete Lo Lightning Test. No simulation.
2. Complete Rain water test of all prototypes, 1st, 6th and 12th production aircraft.
3. Trainer ( two seater) to be delivered first.
4. Design MTBF, MTTR, MMH/ FH must be defined and plan to meet the same in the first 100 sorties should be available.
5. Engine R/I should not exceed 45 minutes.
6. Practical Op TRS to be done on Prototype for A2A & A2G and timings to adhere to IAF standards.
7. Belly loading of heaviest store to be done after aircraft is fully loaded and in 2 x drop tank configuration
8. I & I level documentation/ Publications to be in S 2000 standard.
9. TTGSE audit to be carried out completely rather than ED just taking over.
10. No concessions.
11. Full envelope at sea level with AAR.
12. Canopy open position touching Strake to be studied thoroughly.

IAF THE CUSTOMER SHOULD BE RUTHLESS, NOT JUST THE CHIEF. PMT HAS TO COME DOWN VERY VERY HARD

If they are accurate with 70% they are being awfully ambitious with their timeline. I definitely wouldn't bet the family jewels on it!

If the Tejas MKII project is not taken away from the most inefficient HAL, the project is bound to get delayed by several years.

Government should sell HAL to either to L&T and Kalyani and and hold a minor stake. Too oversee everything. hal has become nothing but a joke. Even GT is saying it will start delivery upto 30 engines from next year. Even after closing their production line for this unit.

The issue is work culture in government entities. You can appeal if you don't get a managerial position just because you have seniority.

The best of the best are not promoted. They just leave to work in the west. What we have left are the lifers who "duck the dog". Do nothing and keep the rotting system going.

That's why goverment should sell HAL. Government employee start thinking themselves as owner of anywhere they work. They're even more hectic than gen z. Gen z wants work like balance. Meanwhile goverment employees stop their work an hour before and go home.

The Babus allow it because they do the same thing, but at least they can travel the world in first-class and 5 star hotels with their entourage who are busy with important things like opening the door for the Babu and making lunch and dinner reservation at Michelin 5 star restaurants. Of course a personal photographer to properly document the trip.
