Zoho CEO Sridhar Vembu Calls for Technological Self-Reliance in Jets and Drones, Emphasizing Private Sector's Patriotic Role in R&D

Zoho Corporation CEO Sridhar Vembu has called for India to achieve technological self-reliance in critical sectors like defence, stressing the importance of innovation for national security and economic strength.

His comments come amidst a debate on India's indigenous Tejas fighter jet program and the broader need for self-sufficiency in defence production.

Vembu emphasized the need for India to "invent jets and drones," stating that for a nation of India's size and population, technological innovation is crucial to secure its place in the world.

He highlighted that this requires significant investment in long-range industrial research and development, particularly from the private sector. He called this a "patriotic mission," urging private companies to step up and contribute to India's technological advancement.

This call for self-reliance resonates with the ongoing "Aatmanirbhar Bharat" (Self-Reliant India) initiative, which aims to reduce dependence on imports and boost domestic manufacturing, particularly in the defence sector. Projects like the Tejas fighter jet and the upcoming Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) are seen as crucial steps towards this goal.

Vembu's comments come in the wake of criticism from Indian Air Force (IAF) Chief Air Chief Marshal AP Singh regarding the slow production of Tejas fighter jets by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL).

Singh stressed the need for advanced manufacturing processes and increased participation from private players to accelerate production and enhance efficiency.

The debate surrounding India's military aviation strategy has intensified, with some advocating for the purchase of foreign fighter jets to quickly bolster the IAF's capabilities. However, others argue for strengthening domestic manufacturing to ensure strategic autonomy and reduce reliance on foreign suppliers.

Vembu's call for greater private sector involvement in defence R&D highlights the need for a collaborative approach between the government, public sector undertakings, and private companies to achieve self-reliance in defence technology.

By fostering innovation, investing in R&D, and promoting indigenous development, India can strengthen its defence capabilities and secure its position as a leading technological power.
