Born in Bharat T72 SDMR Rifle by SSS Defence Offers Superior 7.62mm Precision for Indian Army's Squad-level Combat Effectiveness

In a significant boost to India's indigenous defence manufacturing capabilities, Bengaluru-based SSS Defence unveiled its new T72 Squad Designated Marksman Rifle (SDMR) on May 17, 2025.

This advanced firearm, chambered for the powerful 7.62x51mm NATO round, underscores the company's dedication to the "Born in Bharat" initiative, aiming to equip Indian forces with locally developed and manufactured weaponry.

The T72 SDMR is engineered to provide infantry squads with a precision fire capability that extends beyond standard-issue rifles, without requiring a fully specialised sniper.

Such rifles are designed to accurately engage targets at distances typically up to 800 metres. This role has become increasingly crucial in modern warfare, adopted by many Western militaries and Special Forces to enhance squad-level tactical options.

The 7.62x51mm NATO ammunition used by the T72 offers considerable advantages in terms of stopping power and ability to penetrate barriers compared to smaller calibre rounds, making it highly effective for intermediate-range engagements in diverse combat environments.

This latest development from SSS Defence represents a notable advancement in India's pursuit of self-reliance in armament. The company has previously gained recognition for other indigenous firearms, including its Sabre sniper rifle and M72 carbine.

The introduction of the T72 SDMR, however, directly addresses a specific need within the Indian armed forces for sophisticated, domestically produced small arms.

For years, the Indian Army has utilised platforms like the Russian-made Dragunov for similar roles. The T72 SDMR offers a modern, Indian-made alternative, aligning with the government's overarching "Atmanirbhar Bharat" (self-reliant India) policy aimed at fostering indigenous defence production.

The development of such systems domestically is crucial for enhancing national security and reducing dependency on foreign suppliers.

As SSS Defence seeks to secure defence contracts, the T72 SDMR positions it as an important contributor to India's evolving defence industrial base. With its potent firepower and indigenous origins, this new rifle has the potential to play a key role in the ongoing modernization efforts of the Indian military.

Even if the IA is unwilling to induct those, at least our Paramilitary should be inducting those homegrown rifles. COBRA, CRPF, BSF, and IRB should give a chance to SSS Defence. I think Armenia might be interested.

On one end we have neighbours like ours and on the other end we have private sector putting their money for R&D, but no orders from IA, during this time also.
